Why did not lichess take action against Magnus Carlsen for cheating?

Magnus did nothing wrong, did not "cheat". It was Howell who decided to help him spontaneously. Magnus did not ask him for that, it was not under Magnus' control. Why would Lichess take action against somebody who did nothing wrong? For what?
Ok, Magnus banned. Or for that matter any top GM banned. Then what? They all are filled with remorse and apologize to Lichess? Then Lichess becomes a utopian people's democracy where rules are enforced and all are equal?

The fact of the matter is that GMs caught cheating will be censored, criticised by fellow GMs. I don't think Magnus will enjoy being called a cheater by his _fellow_ GMs. I don't think anybody is calling him cheater, atleast in his level.

I think you are confusing free and open source with being a democracy. The admins run the site as they see it fit. The name change rule idiots are already causing enough ruckus. The ToC lawyers are doing pro bono nuisance.

Magnus being on Lichess brings audience. He has some power. To the extent that apparently Lichess gonna allow multiple accounts in near future. Whereas ToC idiots are making things difficult for everyone because they couldn't go to Harvard Law School.

In any case, if anyone is gonna leave because they were banned for cheating because someone else also cheated, or because someone also had some stupid name etc., are nobody's loss. Sensible players will still enjoy a good server without getting into mud slinging.with the SJWs..

Magnus didn't ask for David's help. It was an accident from David's side. And definitely not a deliberate attempt to act dishonestly. Hence Magnus didn't cheat.
We don't comment on moderation with respect to individual cases and discuss only with the people involved. In situations where streamers have had ideas from chat/commentators, our established process is to warn the user. Repeated or deliberate behaviour may be treated more severely.
