New rule in Crazyhouse World Championship 2021 relating to withdrawals/disqualifications made during Double Elimination Knockout Stage:

If a player either voluntarily withdraws or is disqualified by organisers, then the last opponent that was defeated by the withdrawn/disqualified player will be given a second chance to take the place of that player.

This can have a number of flow on effects given the double elimination knockout structure and timing of events. In short, the guiding principles will be:
• It will be preferable for an occurrence of a withdrawal/disqualification of a player to provide opportunity for a prior defeated opponent who would have certainly been entitled to such opportunity had the withdrawal/disqualification occurred earlier during the tournament
• When such opportunity is given to a prior defeated opponent, they should overall stand to gain a better position in the tournament within the double elimination knockout stage (this will be obvious in cases where a player that was already eliminated from two losses has the chance to play again, however there are more complex scenarios where a player has only had one loss, but then is permitted to re-enter the upper bracket of the tournament due to a withdrawal/disqualification)

As organisers, we are hopeful that these cases are more rare than common, but will work through them case by case. This new rule has been raised from learning in prior years where it seemed clear that opportunities were missed by prior defeated opponents of players who were withdrawn/disqualified. We will be open to learning again this year with this change in place.
