What is the point of followers anyway? (Feature request)

Currently there's no way to follow the activities of the people you're interested in. There is no point in even following people in the first place, except increase their count. I've never even noticed the follower count going away before checking the forums.

Lichess seems to have made it clear that this site is about chess, it's not a popularity contest or a social media site (thus there aren't any profile pictures either). Why not replace the follow button with an endorsement button? Give user the option to point out opponents that have been respectful or that you've played interesting, entertaining games against.

I don't agree with this, the follower system does have many benefits:

* You can actually follow the activities of those people, it shows up in your timeline on the homepage (forum posts, blogs, streams, ...).
* The blog overview has a dedicated section "Friends blogs" (at the moment this is the only content type that has such a dedicated section, but that won't necessarily be the case in the future, of course)
* Privacy: lichess.org/account/preferences/privacy has a lot of settings that you can set to "Only friends", meaning people that you have followed.
Fair enough, I suppose you're right, it's not immediately obvious what all effects of following are.
