Hi, I have been playing in lichess for quite a time now, and I often like to play the tournaments. I like the idea recently introduced to have thematic opening tournaments, and I like the diversification into U1500-U1700-U2000.
I think what is lacking at the moment is:
a) different tournament systems
b) tournament time format
a) : All tournaments are based on the number of points you can win within a given amount of time (e.g. 55 minutes, 1h 55 minutes). I think this suit attacking chess players - as the sooner you win the sooner you get your points and go to the next game. However I believe you get penalised if you are a player who likes to get into some positional lines rather than go all in for an attack. For the same reason I am not a fan of the Berserk mode either.
It would be cool to have "some" tournaments based on the number of participants at the beginning and fixing a number of rounds, rather than a time, after which the tournament ends. Something like a 7 rounds Swiss system tournament? We could introduce a different tournament system in one of the two spots taken by the Blitz and Classical Arena, instead of having both of them going every hour, given there are U1500/U1700/U2000 tournaments running at the same time ( *** it would be interesting to analyse the stats on the participants ).
b) : This is just a more simple consideration on the time format. I often find myself creating my own rapid games as 15+10 or 25+10, because these rapid options don't exist in the tournaments. We could introduce longer Classical arenas (15 minutes) or Classical Inc Arenas (e.g. 13+2).
Does anybody feel the same way about tournament systems and time formats? And if so, how would he/she tackle my a) and b) points? I am really curious to know what other users think of this topic , and hear from the developers ( @thibault , ... ) if all of this would be doable and if this would be a test worth trying.
Regards,
Marco
