Puzzle 96988 Incorrect Solution

Well then the only probable explanation I can give is Rxd4 is either a mate in 9 or 12 but Re3 is a mate in fewer moves

The solution given is indeed incorrect

@Koo8384 just go to the position and let stockfish calculate it. Hit the plus on the analysis button because 25 depth wasn't enough to find it. It might take a minute, but Rxd4 is stockfish's choice once it has time to think. The puzzle algorithm doesn't spend that long looking for the best move, so it just got made into a puzzle with the second best move Re3 as the answer

Perhaps the puzzle solutions are based on what stockfish suggests right from that move and the lines after that move are not considered

The default depth is 18, that's when it suggests Re3. When you let it analyze for longer, at depth 40 it sees a mate in 9.

This is really cool. I entered the thread ready to say "you're probably wrong" but you are actually right. The puzzle is incorrect.
