Automatic leave detection feature punishes connection losses

I just lost a 15+15 game because my internet connection had a hick-up and I lost the connection for 2 minutes. When I reconnected, my opponent had already claimed the win.

This makes me wonder about the feature that automatically detects when a player has left the game and gives the opponent the options to claim win, draw or wait. On the "winning" side of that, I really like the feature for players that leave the clock running in dead lost positions out of spite, but now that it happened to me for a different reason, I'm of course not too happy about it.

I'm interested to know under what circumstances the feature kicks in, and how much time I have to reconnect if I lose my connection, so that I can try and reconnect faster the next time it happens.

Thank you very much! :)
The disconnection timeout is currently 2 minutes, seemingly irrespective of time control (unless you are hosting a simultaneous exhibition).
Thanks for the answer! I must have just missed the timeout by a few seconds. I guess there probably isn't really a way to tell whether a player has left due to a connection problem or unsportsmanshiplike behavior. Could it be worth considering to increase the time for longer games? Or maybe have an algorithm check whether the position is dead lost, or if a player has left games intentionally before, on a regular basis. That sounds a little too complicated for too little an improvment, I'll have to admit.
I assume it would make the most sense to based the timeout duration on the time control, maybe something like:
* bullet - 1 minute
* blitz - 2 minutes
* classical - 5 minutes
"Or maybe have an algorithm check whether the position is dead lost"

This is a terrible idea. You should not be granted a win or any sort of special dispensation just because a computer sees a win for you.

Two minutes is absurdly long in my opinion. Personally, I don't care whether my opponent has thrown a tantrum and left or if their connection is faulty, either one I see as their own responsibility and neither makes me want to sit around just in the hope that they return. I'd rather be, you know, playing chess.

The answer is, accept that ratings in online chess are utterly meaningless, and just move on to the next game. It can be frustrating in the moment, but then, it really doesn't matter in any way. I'd much rather lose a game because my Internet went down, but not have to sit forever when it happens to someone else.
Took my a while to find it, but here is a thread with an explanation that contradicts that of @Toadofsky:

"The system separates between ragequits and internet problems. Meaning if you lose connection to the server, while staying on the page, you will have 90s to reconnect (if I recall correctly). But if you close the tab you will only have 15s to reconnect before your opponent can claim a win"

It is definitely not the case that it always takes two minutes, unless that is a very recent change.

Yeah when I said contradiction I was referring to the 90 second vs 2 minutes part, not the rage quit part. But you've provided a link right to the source. :)
