Profile picture - what do you people think?

Also, I happen to agree with Cynosure. The simplicity and streamlined style is classy and distinguishes the site.
Dionysus_god: then, you don't know anything about me.

It's just a simple image.

Would be interesting if Lichess had a "voting system" or probes.
I agree with you, I don't mind seeing images. I personally wouldn't care if someone had a picture of a lovely pair of boobies, or even an image of a beheaded man, but I understand the concerns about moderating such things.

I also understand how the option to allow such things will degrade the overall image of the site. "Decadence" is not a word that I think lichess ought to be associated with.
adding profile images will remove lichess minimalist style.
Interesting discussion but.....it was in forum few time ago,
Everyone has a little right,I like Idea with photo but I agree
with such users like Bourboun53,

"lichess has minimalist style",

I,as stylist had some work:)
.....
Is saying:
"You can drink alcohol alone but You can invite Your friend.....and You can also eat his fries":)
No offence:)

For me,lichess is like vodka,the best alone,no add,no ads,no more
It's cool
Cheers
I understand that lichess is minimalist. Simplicity in most cases means better. As they say "less is more". Why? Becouse we don't like everyday thousands of cheap lights and "spamish" colorful things all around. But exageration works in both sides. So obviously you can be too minimalist. I don't know about moderating, i have no experience, I wouldn't like to check reported picutres, but I don't think it would be that much to moderate at all. Back to simplicity, lichess stands for the free chess site that is developed by volounteers. Thus it's improved every day and that's why people love it. So many of them believe it's gonna be more and more beautiful. We don't turn around from good things during the day just becouse they are a little more complex. That's how we grow. You can put a picture next to your profile at almost all site's all over the internet. Hundreds of millions of users on facebook - do they have a problem with moderating? I doubt.
I may be in the minority here, but I really don't think Facebook is something for a chess site to emulate.

The question is, does thibault and co. wish the site to be more popular, at the expense of a degradation in quality. I don't care either way.

#27 facebook comparison is only to depict the ammount of pictures to moderate, which should not be a big deal. Lichess avatars would be a drop in an ocean in that comparison.
please no pictures, it would ruin the incredibly sharp and modern feel to our beloved lichess
Before discovering Lichess, I somehow managed to stomach Chess.com despite its dozens of redundant menus, banner ads, clashing colors and ugly icons. Perhaps worst of all were the bizarre avatars people chose for themselves, ranging from blurry, zoomed in photos of parts of faces to nonsensical cartoon characters stretched and contorted beyond recognition to worse. Lichess is a marvel of elegant simplicity in form and function and I worry that avatars would disrupt this.

Perhaps it's a fair compromise to make in exchange for users expressing their individuality. Perhaps small icons or avatars that only show up on the profile page would alleviate some design concerns. Still it would be best to proceed with caution, and in my opinion not at all, lest we end up unintentionally turning each game page into the cluttered mess that exists elsewhere.
