Vote to assassinate new red audio icon

same here
people have been spamming the forums with this need-to-be-banned-forever-and-kicked-to-the-sun red icon thingie.
Responding to post 21 @TBest

I used Lichess TV to test the site sound. Not every browser behaves the same or had the speaker icon on the left or right of the web page tab. Uniformity having it on the left would have been good. I don't think new users will know or play with the setting to get site sounds.

Chromium Browser, Version 103.0.5060.134 (Developer Build, ungoogled-chromium) (64 bits)
Lichess Sound (On); Short-cut Ctrl+M (Not working); Tab speaker Icon (Visible / Not Clickable/)

Google Chrome, Version 115.0.5790.110 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Lichess Sound (On); Short-cut Ctrl+M (Not working); Tab speaker Icon (Visible / Not Clickable/)

Opera One(version: 101.0.4843.25)
Lichess Sound (On); Short-cut Ctrl+M (Not working); Tab speaker icon (Visible beside the Lichess icon tab / Clickable: Mutes & Enables sound)

Cent Browser, Version 5.0.1002.354 (Official Build) (32-bit) (Portable) (Chromium 102.0.5005.167)
Lichess Sound (On); Short-cut Ctrl+M (Not working, Opens new tab); Tab speaker icon (Visible / Clickable: Mutes & Enables sound)

Mozilla Firefox Browser, Version 115.0.2 (64-bit)
My Desktop Autoplay default was set to Block audio. So I saw the red icon on the right of the screen.
Pressed keys: Ctrl+i
Click Permissions tab
Auto Play Unselected: Use Default (Not in the steps) lichess.org/faq#autoplay
Selected: Allow Audio and Video
Now the sound is constantly on and the red speaker icon gone. Was the only browser I saw the red icon.
Sound (Now On); Short-cut Ctrl+M (ok); Tab speaker icon (Visible & Replaces the Lichess icon when mouse hover over it / Clickable: Mutes & Enables sound)

Microsoft Edge, Version 115.0.1901.183 (Official build) (64-bit)
Lichess Sound (On); Short-cut Ctrl+M (Not working); Tab speaker icon (Visible beside the Lichess icon tab / Clickable: Mutes & Enables sound)

Epic Privacy Browser, Version 104.0.5112.81 (Official Build) (32-bit)
Lichess Sound (No sound, Videos work with sound, not the game pieces); Short-cut Ctrl+M (Not working); Tab speaker icon (Not visible / Not Clickable)

UR, Version 108.1.5359.9 (BETA) (64-bit)
Lichess Sound (On); Short-cut Ctrl+M (Not working); Tab speaker Icon (Visible / Not Clickable/)

AVG Secure Browser, Version 114.0.21608.200 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Lichess Sound (On); Short-cut Ctrl+M (Not working); Tab speaker Icon (Visible / Not Clickable/)

I did not test all the ones mention in this link....

> Unfortunately, It isn't totally 100% there yet on my Ipad after doing all the possible IOs updates. There were occasions last night where sound was lost. I resolved it by clicking my name top right - and it gets sound back during a game. I can handle this but I thought I should put out there is still sometimes an issue. Overall most of the time sound was back after the Ios updates though.

We'll keep working on it.

> I wonder if maybe it justifies a user interface option of opting out of the "auto-sensing red sound icon" if you have sound or not - as it actually seems to create sometimes a lack of sound issue, which i don't think was the intention of the new feature. It is acting rather like a new Gremlin in the system at this point.

The red icon isn't the source of your audio problems, it's just a notifier. Regarding a preference to roll back to the previous implementation - it's certainly possible, but it would be a bit painful. We replaced the legacy sound library we were using with many fewer lines of web audio code. We did it to support browser redirection on completion of sounds, and the code size reduction was kind of a bonus. So I'm committed to patching the new code as issues are found rather than going backwards. I wasn't expecting this to be the first library rewrite in history to go as planned.

That said, we do recognize that it's very inconvenient for users to experience hiccups where previously there were none. We appreciate everyone's patience as we iron out the remaining issues.
I had the same issue, and my "solution" is to make my first move by clicking two squares instead of dragging the piece. The clock only starts after the first move, so this costs no time. And clicking seems to allow sounds. This also works when clicking a later move, but then this is slightly slower.

Works both in Safari and Firefox. I have Ipad OS 16.6 installed, latest Update for my old 3. generation Ipad.
I suggest just let us turn it on by clicking on the icon
btw I was not expecting a 1 mounth ago topic that is open
there's a fix for the dragging issue after the next restart.
I hope this does not kill all the new audio features where it might be welcome. Bullet is not all of lichess. There are places we might be more patients, as pre-condition of using lichess. I am speaking in full ignorance of the annoyance though. I have not seen any red sound related icon yet, in my lichess usage.. And I know it is only a small part of it. But then the noise about that, kind of has me worried that the fixes might be killing too much, as a quick fix. Jeter le bébé avec l'eau du bain, might be a greedy solution.
Still no audio for moves when playing a game. In analysis mode or puzzles the audio seems to work for me though.
This is on Firefox 115.0.2 (ESR).
