I myself always wanted to have a cat - I can remember, that I liked cats since a very early age. But a dog is the best friend a human can have - and they may not be as picky as a cat is. So, I couldn't really decide: I really love cats, but I have experience with dogs and thus know dogs a little better. And thus my answer is: Both are great companions!
