Why would someone cheat at online chess?

Online cheating is absolutely pathetic. First of all, I see no reason why people should do it. It's dishonest, it's inconsiderate, it's rude, and it's just completely pathetic! I don't get angry when I encounter cheaters because I realize all I'm losing are just rating points. And if one gets upset about online rating....they need to go to a counselor. Online play is just to give you practice and to give you something fun to do. It doesn't show your true strength at all. So if you cheat and get upset about rating, you should go find a different sport. :)

Half? Is that right?

Hardly worth playing on here then.

Or perhaps some of us should get a rating boost for not cheating.
Alright, because people are already upset enough with me, I'll come clean. I reverted to my old ways in a classical tournament, and used computer assistance against @Krsto, @kingpong, @Beltham, and @kerespaul. I'd like to apologize to all of these people, as I let the childish behavior of my past take control of me again, and I cheated to try to get my rating up to get more people in my simuls at no risk to me. I'm sorry my selfishness affected all of you. For whatever it's worth, I didn't cheat in any of my simuls, nor did I cheat outside of that. I'm also sorry to the whole lichess community, I know when someone cheats, it ruins the game for everyone else and you don't like it. I just, at the very least, wanted to get it out there. I honestly can't believe I was enough of an idiot to cheat in a tournament just for promotion of my simuls (not only that, I probably could've won all of those games just with my expert level.) I don't expect forgiveness from any of you, but I at least wanted to clear my conscience. I'm sorry to anyone following me who may be disappointed. Stay amazing, people of the best online chess site.
This has been very educational. I appreciate everyone's thoughts.

@beyondthemask mask "Pathetic" is the perfect word for it. I have not played any chess to date with USCF or any other other organization. I joined Lichess last month and this is the most chess I have played in 6 years. My rating here is interesting to me only as one way to track my progress now that I am playing again, it is certainly not something I find identity in. But it is good to know, just for the sake of taking it into account, that there will be some players who are cheating.

@SilentLucidity, instead of asking people to verify your USCF rating, why don't you just play here and not cheat if you want to be recognized as the strong player you are? You could be Tigran Petrosian back from the dead and people won't believe you or simply won't care if your profile here says you cheat.
I didn't see your comment until I had posted mine.

Wow, dude...for someone who claims to want to be honest you sure make it close to impossible to believe what you say.
#25, 26 Well, I wanted to play honestly, and I was succeeding, but I just got greedy and reverted back to my old ways. The entire point of this account was to start anew and play legitimately (which, being a fairly strong expert, shouldn't be too hard) but I ruined it with a dumb mistake. I'm as upset with myself, probably more, than you or anybody else who is upset with me. I finally was playing honestly, and pretty well, I had nice simuls going on, then I ruined it. To anybody else who cheats, who's not been caught in a vicious cycle yet, stop cheating. It will only harm you if you ever become good. Can't even do simuls now, which are the most fun thing I've ever done in chess.
#28 I'm going to avoid that, but just play on ICC because I have a membership anyway. I'll always love you wherever I am, though. <3
On a more serious note, it's cool for you to be pissed at me for cheating, but at least I have the balls to admit I've done it, and apologize to the victims. I have a problem, and one I'm trying my damndest to fix. Don't think of me as your average weak cheater who likes spoiling other people's fun. I'm a strong player with a fairly long, hard to escaoe history of cheating who made a mistake. So go ahead, get mad. Just don't misinterpret who I am as a person and chess player.
You didn't admit anything you baffoon. You said you stopped cheating with this account, then the anti-cheat team checked your games and... BOOM! BUSTED!
You're a liar and you'll most probably never stop cheating. Scumbags like you are the reason everytime we lose, we have a small doubt that maybe my opponent cheated.
Do you even understand cheaters like you are compromising the integrity of the game itself?
Why I'm I even wasting my energy talking to you... just close your account thanks.
Oh and tell us your ICC name, cause for sure you're cheating with that one too. Slimeball.
