What is your experience with takebacks?

I have no problem with takebacks, never ask for them, never grant them. Do you know the story of King Canute's game with Earl Ulf in 1026? Canute took back a move without asking. He was the king, after all. Ulf called him on it, said "you can't do that." Canute said I do what I want. The game was abandoned, and the next day Ulf was murdered, despite the fact that he was Canute's son-in-law. Gotta be careful. heritage-images.com/preview/2378401

I guess the king wasn't too angry if the guy wasn't tortured before being murdered.
@kaotic99 that draw-begging happens OTB also, especially with young players (under 20). In a dead lost position, I have had kids ask for a draw 3 moves in a row. I could have complained that it was harrassment but their desperation was their punishment.
Ulf was not son-in-law, but brother-in-law to Canute. He had married Canute's sister.
I only request takebacks if I mouse slipped or mis-clicked. Even then, it is a request and it is up to my opponent whether they accept it or not. And I accept and respect it if they don't. No hard feelings. But I do appreciate it when someone is generous enough to understand where I am coming from and grant the request.

When my opponent requests a takeback, I presume that they do so out of good faith. Unless I have good reasons to believe otherwise. So I generally accept them. It is just a chess game, rated or not. Not the end of the world. And besides, if you play a lot of games, you eventually stabilize in your appropriate rating.

An exception to this case could be when I sense that a takeback request is not based on good faith. Like in some rare situations, I've found opponents who would request takebacks multiple times once I granted them. At that point, it feels like exploitation. When I grant takebacks, I don't expect anything in return as this shouldn't be transactional and it was up to me to grant it knowingly in the first place.

Fortunately, I don't encounter takebacks too often, nor do I request them much. If I did, I might have found them annoying and turned them off completely.
I find that occasionally, opponents will be kind and show great sportsmanship and accept take backs, but mostly people decline or ignore them.

I really don't know why takebacks are even a feature on here, I ask for take backs sometimes, and Lichess has threatened to ban me for it lol

I think you didn't read my post. My opponent blundered, asked for a takeback and I granted it. When I blundered later and asked for a takeback they didn't grant it.
@Overcooker Takebacks are about misclicks & are usually ignored even then' . You cannot for example grant a 'takeback' in an over the board rated game it's illegal

That was the only time I ever asked for a takeback. I wasn't upset because they declined it, I was upset because they took advantage of me being too nice. That said, now I have them off, problem solved.
