Study endgames or openings first?

@FM Chessmotion and what material do you suggest for studying these basic tactics and strategies in endgames?

I have always hated those dull positions and I always play my game to avoid an endgame, especially an equal endgame.
that's an old system and modern players can beat nimzowitch easily. And it's also a low quality book.
My system is basically Nimzowitsch stroking his ego. Its not a book I would read if I wanted to improve as a chess player.
"In order to improve your game, you must study the endgame before everything else.
For whereas the endings can be studied and mastered by themselves, the middle game and opening must be studied in relation to the end game." -Capablanca

I believe him.. :)
and why not believe Kasparov that said the opening is the only stage of the game that allows true creativity?

It's easy for capablanka because he knew how to lead every game to an endgame then work out his technique, but we aren't all capablanka, we like attacking the king, crushing the center, taking the initiative.
@GentjanLici the problem is that your opening won't always lead to a successful attack on the king.

I'll never forget when a master once told me "the endgame is the soul of chess." He said it with his Russian accent too, so it made it seem even more credible! :)
He also said something to the effect that it's by studying the endgame that you really understood what each piece can do. The inherent potential and capabilities of each piece.

Of course we need to study both, but I would put more importance on the endgame... so many time I play, lets say an 1800, but when we get into an endgame he loses like a 1400
@lovlas My System discusses a wide range of topics such as positional play (prophylaxis), end game maneuvers, essential ideas in the opening, etc. It inspired a generation of players, including grandmasters, so it's definitely worth OP's time.
#19 Yeah I have read it. Imo its close to garbage. But its interesting from a historical point of view
