  1. auroach when your 2 year old has a meltdown on move 11
  2. RobUmbra For those who know this opening well, what is the general plan for white/black from this point on? IE what are the thematic ideas? Thx
  3. moha369 What move you are talking about ?
  4. moha369 Well i can say this is Nimzo-Indian
  5. ErinYu Normally white tries to attack the center and kingside with moves like e5 and f5, and black targets the queenside.
  6. moha369 Taylor blundered a pawn.
  7. ErinYu That's a super rough explanation, though, and a lot of the time both sides play flexible moves since the pawn structure isn't defined.
  8. moha369 Analysis God, @ErinYu
  9. ErinYu In this position I'm guessing black wants to play d5, consistent with the typical attack on c4.
  10. ErinYu If I knew this stuff I'd be a GM lol
  11. moha369 You dont analyse good in your game, just ours <3 lol
  12. ErinYu It's kinda like a Hedgehog, now, though... so maybe white might play stuff like b4 instead of kingside moves.
  13. moha369 Did taylor blundered a pawn ? Answer me.
  14. RobUmbra Thanks for the thoughts.
  15. ErinYu Probably a blunder... but it gives black some play maybe.
  16. ErinYu @RobUmbra So here's this game http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1048630.
  17. ErinYu In these kinds of variations white wants a pawn structure like c3 c4 d4 e4 f4 and black generally doesn't want that.
  18. ErinYu But more often than not the game devolves into some random pawn structure since it's all super flexible, and the plans aren't clear-cut.
  19. ErinYu In this game white succeeded in getting the pawn to e5, one of the plans, but had no way to use it. So black just did stuff on the queenside
  20. ErinYu Then moved over to the kingside after white's pieces sucked.
  21. RobUmbra Great thanks.
  22. ErinYu I know that isn't a good answer :) but the Nimzo is a massive opening and any one variation leads to different pawn structures.
  23. RobUmbra That's why I struggle with these things. I get some half ideas and confuse them with other half ideas.
  24. ErinYu A huge part of it is being flexible. Like if you play f4 too early then black can rip open the center and suddenly you're worse.
  25. ErinYu Yeah, the Nimzo is hard...
  26. RobUmbra At my level, I am just trying to not screw up the opening, develop and get ready for some tactics
  27. RobUmbra But I aspire to a higher level so it always useful to hear the perspective of good players
  28. ErinYu Same! Though I play the Slav as black and 1.e4 as white, so I never really played the Nimzo.
  29. RobUmbra You don't get that just looking at the computer analysis of your games
  30. ErinYu Yeah, a lot of 1.d4 openings are super hard since they're so broad. It's not clear-cut like in a Sicilian where you sac everything.
  31. RobUmbra I like to play d4. Mostly London like when I first started but no branching out into QGD etc as some ideas carry over and it makes me less
  32. RobUmbra predictable in the league
  33. RobUmbra Also trying to react more properly to my opponents response early on
  34. ErinYu Here's a board 1 example if you're interested... lichess.org/Ofyc1Vrq
  35. ErinYu White gets e4 but black rips open the queenside before white gets a chance to play f4 e5. Then suddenly a Benoni. Chess is hard.
  36. RobUmbra That N on D6 is poison for black. I have taken it before and lost my Q.
  37. RobUmbra I try not to do that anymore!
  38. ErinYu Kind of a bad answer, but Nimzos are pretty much whatever goes lol
  39. ErinYu Oh, nice find. I was thinking moving it back lol
  40. RobUmbra Thanks for the games. I think implicit in your answers is studying higher quality games is useful. I will certainly try to add that.
  41. RobUmbra Some of it just seems like magic though
  42. ErinYu If you can make it to move 12 without dying and you know the basics about IQP, hanging pawns, center and open positions, you're already good
  43. ErinYu Even players at board 1 have huge gaps in knowledge, like not knowing sacrificing c4 in some lines is actually a good thing.
  44. RobUmbra Haha That's makes me feel better for when I lose in 13 moves!
  45. ErinYu I played lovlas in a Catalan once... and I was out of book my move 5 lol. My running joke is that I lost on move 6.
  46. ErinYu Memorizing openings is important... not as much as knowing plans, but it kinda sucks when you just blunder early
  47. IsaVulpes Yeah just look at me
  48. IsaVulpes I know nothing but openings and am closing in on 2200 Classical
  49. ErinYu Bet you at least knew what the Giuoco Piano was when you joined lol
  50. IsaVulpes auroach looks like he is playing some pretty good moves
  51. IsaVulpes looks very solid
  52. ErinYu I wonder if Nh5 is good for black
  53. ErinYu Though I guess Nxf7...
  54. RobUmbra Yeah exactly
  55. IsaVulpes b4 now?
  56. IsaVulpes b4-b5 actually looks very annoying
  57. ErinYu I like that, too
  58. ErinYu Maybe also e4-e5, fixing the knight on d6. Then Bb1 and b4 later
  59. IsaVulpes i was thinking b4 Qxx b5 Bc8 and then go Be2-f3 and ask black what he does about his rook on a8
  60. ErinYu Qh5 looks really tenuous but that stops Be2 for at least a move.
  61. ErinYu Maybe that's enough time for g5-g4, if that even works.
  62. ErinYu It's 10pm... everything I say might be highly dubious.
  63. IsaVulpes 4 am for me, I'm happy if my suggestions dont drop a rook in 1 :D
  64. ErinYu Why are you up at 4am :)
  65. ErinYu I tried scheduling once at 1am. It was horrible. Can't imagine 4am.
  66. IsaVulpes Yeah I wouldnt play at this hour
  67. IsaVulpes But being awake is normal for me
  68. IsaVulpes i still have some vague dreams of ne4 bc7 and fully paralyzing all his pieces on the backrank
  69. ErinYu "Dreams" lol
  70. moha369 It ia 5 am for me
  71. moha369 and i am feeling nice 😁
  72. ErinYu Relaxing or coding? :)
  73. ErinYu I like b5 Bc8 but I also want to play Ne4 and get to e4 with a tempo. Also Nxf6 Nxf6 Bh7+ would win the piece.
  74. ErinYu Oh, this move order is also good.
  75. RobUmbra this is a nice sequence. quite clever imo
  76. RobUmbra 22. .. Rc8 23. b5 Bxc4 though right?
  77. RobUmbra sorry Bxb5
  78. RobUmbra c4 pinned
  79. IsaVulpes yeah i liked the immediate b5 much better
  80. IsaVulpes espec with the queen having gone to g5, the be2-f3 plan would be available as well
  81. IsaVulpes difficult to avoid just losing material
  82. IsaVulpes now instead theres quite some pressure on c4, blacks Ra8 is developed, and we gave our knight on d6 for the one on f6 without concrete gain
  83. RobUmbra f4?
  84. RobUmbra loses
  85. RobUmbra mate
  86. RobUmbra That's tough in the end on white. Had built a good position
  87. auroach yeah i was completely blind to that
  88. RobUmbra gg. Enjoyable watch. Thanks for the tips
