  1. dnlhlt alright I didn't expect Nf3, let's see if I remember this...
  2. dnlhlt the problem is I know I have looked at the theory in 3. Nf3 things but I have rarely seen it come up in games I play
  3. dnlhlt I know moving the bishop to Ba6 to provoke b3 and then back to Bb7 at a later point is a key idea of the Queen's Indian
  4. dnlhlt I would remember the moves better if I learned it at 5 instead of 23 but oh well
  5. dnlhlt but at the end of the day the main point is just making good moves with a purpose
  6. dnlhlt attempting to evaluate this position after 9 moves, I would say my DSB is a bit better and my opponent seems to have more space
  7. dnlhlt but it doesn't seem like either side has a huge advantage
  8. dnlhlt I think d5 is good because it limits white's options while also giving an escape square for the knight in case of e5
  9. dnlhlt trying to look for alternative ways they can attack now...
  10. dnlhlt was trying to see if Bxd2 to win the e4 square works. It doesn't.
  11. dnlhlt I kinda don't like retreating to e7 because that kinda blocks my own pieces in, but black's pieces are marvelously blocked in and
  12. dnlhlt 13...Bxd2 would be a huge trade for white
  13. dnlhlt I can't see if I got the colors wrong in the first whisper but if I did you know what I meant
  14. dnlhlt if e6 happens I believe I just take and it both opens a file for the rook and I can play Bf6 and threaten d4
  15. dnlhlt not that losing a pawn so close to the king is ideal
  16. dnlhlt but I could've misplayed this worse--I definitely have the potential in me!
  17. dnlhlt perhaps the plan is Nf1 followed by moving the bishop out and then rerouting the knight
  18. dnlhlt I am not sure if that realization particularly changes what I want to do here
  19. dnlhlt regardless, if I want to point something at f1 I would prefer to get the a-pawn advanced first
  20. dnlhlt my allergy-related congestion is mirroring the game
  21. dnlhlt similar idea
  22. dnlhlt I guess the idea is Nc3 to further defend d4
  23. dnlhlt (13) if my rook needs to be on f8 should that become an open file I can move it back
  24. dnlhlt misspoke earlier ftr, it's attacking d5
  25. dnlhlt observation: when you limit your opponent's number of good moves, it is easier to find the best move by process of elimination
  26. dnlhlt the idea is Nb5, if they don't take I can take a3 which wins material because they moved their bishop
  27. dnlhlt so obviously they take but I think their knight is better now anyway and Rc1 after the trade is an option on their queen's file
  28. dnlhlt I just noticed a move white could play to stop that plan and put my horsey in horsey jail
  29. dnlhlt well I might be fine if that happens but there is room for error
  30. dnlhlt unleashing the bishop
  31. dnlhlt d5 is still defended and itself blocks that knight from rerouting
  32. dnlhlt this does weaken d5 but I think I can still defend it
  33. dnlhlt 20...Nb8 is an ugly move and I might already be lost but I am trying to move it to c7 and (probably first) play Bc8 to move queen back
  34. dnlhlt I hope if it's internet or something PocketKnight is able to get back to the game quick, I really don't want two games in a row cut short
  35. dnlhlt (even if that is one of my best hopes for a win here!)
  36. dnlhlt one of the many good things about the 4545 league is I get to play better players who think about the things they do
  37. dnlhlt so the normal tricks to win in the 1300 rapid pool get found out, and I also get to play against actual opening ideas
  38. dnlhlt the threat is obviously Bxc6 but I feel like I can still play Bc8 and as there are no immediate checks that moves the queen off the g-fil
  39. dnlhlt and I can keep control of that diagonal and also d5 with Bc6 at some point
  40. dnlhlt I do not think there is a way to avoid losing a pawn if white wants it
  41. dnlhlt yeah, like that, 23. Qxb5
  42. dnlhlt I almost got the move order wrong and blundered the game (-ish)
  43. dnlhlt double-check, mate, or face a troublesome checkmate!
  44. dnlhlt my rook cannot defend both b6 and the knight, and my bishop can't defend both the knight and d5
  45. dnlhlt everything but ...Ra7 (that I saw) looked too slow
  46. dnlhlt this might be wrong but I think it still keeps d5
  47. dnlhlt going into an endgame down a pawn is probably also losing (for me) but I think everything falls if d5 does
  48. dnlhlt this seems close to over
  49. dnlhlt I am fairly certain this is in no uncertain terms lost and I am seeing less and less reasons not to resign
  50. dnlhlt yeah idk if the queen trade was best either, but I thought it was too threatening to keep yours on the board
  51. PocketKnight39 Oh, BTW, I did have to reboot, and was getting super stressed with the loss of time
  52. dnlhlt yeah I saw you "left the game" for a couple minutes
  53. dnlhlt I got worried because last week my game ended when my opponent had a power outage after move 9!
  54. PocketKnight39 oh dang
  55. PocketKnight39 this has happened 3 weeks in a row, should use a different computer
  56. PocketKnight39 maybe there's a way to continue on a mobile device?
  57. dnlhlt yeah I use my more reliable one for these games
  58. dnlhlt I think so, yes
  59. dnlhlt ah okay cool
  60. PocketKnight39 that was a fun game - thanks again
  61. dnlhlt I was wondering if I had mixed up the theory (rusty in the Queen's Indian)
  62. PocketKnight39 I'm going to have to dig into this one later
  63. PocketKnight39 Yes, I actually looked at our exact line up to about move 5 or 6 before we played
  64. PocketKnight39 I don't normally fianchetto the bishop on g3, but I knew it was sound
  65. dnlhlt but to move 5 we were following Kramnik, Topalov, and a bunch of Aronian games (as white, lots of Anand, Ivanchuk, Karjakin as black)
  66. dnlhlt I expected Nc3
  67. dnlhlt but I am glad to get more experience in an opening people rarely play at my level in regular games
  68. dnlhlt I always worry that openings I "kind of know" are the most dangerous
  69. dnlhlt as actually thinking about the position and playing good moves is better than "uhhhh I think this is the move"
  70. PocketKnight39 Definitely - I've at least played enough of my most common openings that I usually don't get caught off guard,
  71. dnlhlt yeah
  72. PocketKnight39 that said, some fairly simple side lines definitely make me go, "Uhhhhh..."
  73. dnlhlt I face 1. e4 at least 2/3rds of the time
  74. dnlhlt (well I can dig up the real numbers quickly...)
  75. dnlhlt 65%, with 25% 1. d4
  76. dnlhlt so that's 1/8 games
  77. dnlhlt and then a bit less than a third of those are 2. c4
  78. PocketKnight39 I usually go into slav or semi-slav when I face d4 and specifically queen's gambit
  79. PocketKnight39 but I got crushed at least once when someone used Dutch defense
  80. PocketKnight39 so you might look into that and see if it works for you against d4
  81. dnlhlt I've tried the Dutch but I think I wasn't doing it right
  82. dnlhlt one of these days I will give it a more serious go, for sure
  83. PocketKnight39 First time I saw it, I thought it was some unsound gambit or something
  84. PocketKnight39 lost in 19 moves
  85. dnlhlt yeah it definitely looks weird
  86. dnlhlt it looks like someone is trying to play a Sicilian but got the pictures mirrored in their head in a zany mix-up
  87. dnlhlt I wonder if trying to play d4 every now and then as white will make me better at playing against d4 as black
  88. PocketKnight39 I think it's helped me yeah
  89. dnlhlt definitely I think it leads more to games like this
  90. dnlhlt where--perhaps not as quick as it happened to me--but it's more about minor errors adding up
