Why Did My Opponent Move That? Every Time?

I often forget, to my harm, to ask 'why did opponent move that?' or 'what can he do next?' or 'is my move safe'?

Do you 1700-2200 players always ask these? How much time on average, does it take to ask and answer these questions, per move?

Intent of the last move and an evaluation of what the opposition is trying to accomplish is something you always want to look at. How much time it takes depends on the situation. Sometimes it is fairly obvious, other times it is more complicated.

And sometimes, they've played a move that actually doesn't make sense and you just need to make sure it doesn't make sense before you conclude that and punish the inaccuracy.

I'd like to say this is something I always do, but like most amateur players I fairly frequently fail to evaluate my opponent's plans or I fail to correctly do so.
With below 1500 players, questioning the opponent's move is the only way to survive with tons of pointless queen moves threatening mate in 1.
