Wasted game

Although I have won this one, I am actually pretty upset about this game. Up to move 22. it was one of the purest ones I have been playing - almost mistakeless, yet pretty original. Then there was 23. Rd1? Rd3? - quite a weak move for both sides - and two moves later the game was technically over due to a series of two terrible blunders of my oponent. I think it's a pity :/

What do you think you should have played at move 23? And what would you have played in white's position at move 23?

If it wasn't for the blunder, capturing the rook would be much better. I have no idea what would I do as white: if the opponent was stronger, I'd most probably try to enforce a draw somehow, but if he was weaker I'd try to find some sneaky way to deliever backrank mate. The move e4 suggested by the computer seems reasonable.
