Jazz and Big Band

My son is just getting into jazz and big band music and we’re each creating a playlist for an upcoming road trip. So far I have these songs:

1. Autumn Leaves (Bill Evans Trio)
2. Bright Mississippi (Thelonious Monk)
3. Five Spot Blues (Thelonious Monk)
4. Freddie Freeloader (Miles Davis)
5. Night and Day (Jack Jezzro)
6. Waltz for Debby (Bill Evans Trio)
7. The Girl From Ipanema (Oscar Peterson Trio)
8. You Look Good to Me (Oscar Peterson Trio)
9. Gone With the Wind (Art Tatum, Ben Webster)
10. They Can’t Take That Away From Me (Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong)
11. All the Things You Are (Artie Shaw/Helen Forrest)
12. Have You Met Miss Jones (Art Tatum, Ben Webster)
13. Blue in Green (Miles Davis)

Do you have any suggestions? If you post something, please take a moment to mention what you like about the song or artist. Thanks!

@rachel8, obtain any legal jazz "Fake Book" and explore the hundreds of lyrics, tunes (so to speak) and chord changes (sorry to be a bit redundant) to your son's heart's content. Such books aren't terribly expensive, and they provide wonderful opportunities for a lifetime of keyboard learning and exploration, as well (assuming, of course, a keyboard).

What a lucky person you are. An offspring that's into jazz. You must be a fine person as well.

Damn. Come to think of it, I suspect you're the sort of person who already owns one.
work song - Nat and Cannonball Adderley
take five - dave brubeck
Those were the golden ones
Stompy Jones with Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges, the first jazz tune I played and it instantly got me hooked, very swingy swing. It's on the record Side by Side

All of Me with Lester Young and Teddy Wilson on the record Pres and Teddy, to continue with swing. Maybe the best swing pianist, and this tune highlights it!

Cornbread with Lee Morgan. As they state the melody you get a feeling the solos will be sublime. They are.

Wayne Shorter's Adams Apple, kinda similar to the feeling I get with Cornbread.

Crescent, My Favourite Things and A Love Supreme is a nice introduction to Coltrane. David Crosby's anecdote says what's up with 'Trane better than I could in less than two minutes.

Free for All with Art Blakey but expect speeding tickets.

Air Lore is a wonderful venture into free jazz. If that's moreish, try Peter Brötzmann Octet's Machine Gun and Sun Ra's Atlantis

And check out Laufey, she released an album recently, highly recommended!
