"Genius" is a term bandied about by journalists since pen and paper. It is almost 100% misunderstood by the general public, hence the journalist can sell copy with the "sensational" headline. Then to add "exceptional" is laughable to me. It only confirms the ignorance of the author.
I greatly admire Yifan and her talents. Clearly the 2nd best female player off all time by rating. Arguably would win vs Polgar. The future ? May she become the WC.

According to the media, everybody and their brother is a genius nowadays. It looks good in print but does not conform to the true meaning of the term. "Genius" is reserved for the very few. They appear in each generation. Rarely.

Another thing to consider is that ESPN is owned by Disney and the CEO of Disney is a die-hard feminist; so it is only natural to sensationalize the article of a top female chess player.
