PHANTOM: The Automated Chessboard

Hi Everyone!!

For a few months, a friend of mine and me were working on a very exciting project: An automated chessboard that feels and looks like a traditional chess set. It has been a ton of work and we feel very happy whit our progress. We just launched our first Kickstarter campaign to share this awesome project with all the chess enthusiasts and fans of OTB playing.

You can visit the campaign at this Link:

Also, if you want to learn more about the whole process of design and engineering behind the Phantom board, you can check our post in Hackaday:

Of course this just screams regium all over again, but I still hope that someone genuine will be make dreams come true.

@Carlos_Pendas
- How do you handle captures, I didnt see any in the video, what happens to the captured piece?

- How do you handle pieces placed by humans which are not centered, can u still ensure that a Knight can move between pieces properly like shown in the video?

- Can the board setup itself after a game?

- Any idea about retail pricing?
Sounds like an idea I came up with years ago but just gave up on because it was too hard. Nice work! Awesome!
@master_of_DARKNESS

I completely understand the concern as I was also disappointed on Regium ending up being a hoax. To be honest, that was part of the reason I was inspired to achieve this project. You can check my Hackaday page to see all the process and effort it was put into this and you can find all the files to build your own board. In response to your questions:

- The captured piece is placed on the frame of the board first, then the robot places the piece on the captured square. I will add a video of this! youtu.be/X4pencncdEo

- We made sure the pieces won't attract between them, so, if someone misplaces a piece on the board, the knight will push it; then the mechanism will place it correctly if the pushed piece changes of square.

- You will have to make the first set-up. If none of the pieces left the board, the mechanism can set up the pieces correctly afterwards

- We think that retail will be around 600-700

Give your money wisely folks, this checks all the boxes for a scam
Cool project. What happens if you have an under promotion to a knight when you already have two knights on the board ? It would be cool if you could just get the magnet bases and retrofit to sets of your liking.
