Why did this happen?

He shouldn't be prohibited from playing correspondence when he has a tournament to prepare though.
He's talking about the opening it seems. Not throughout the game.

Let's face it, if (for instance) you use the HIARCS opening database without switching on the engine, you will still be reviewing a lot of engine generated moves.

I play correspondence on lichess and only use the lichess opening book. I would never use an engine or other databases when playing here. But when I was playing ICCF I used every resource at my disposal and that was expected. So it's easy to see how people could get confused about the rules. It's not cheating, just due to the lack of general rules of engagement in online correspondence chess.
I am probably ending up being stupid but I just wanna make sure I am not cheating

1) is using the lichess opening/game database allowed in a correspondence game
2) is using the lichess engine (not in the opening, not in the position) allowed? in a completely different position, say just analyzing a blitz game I had on the site not in the opening played on the correspondence game?
By extension do I get flagged a cheater if I only have 1. e4 on the board in a correspondence game and happen to have the engine on in analysis with just 1. e4 on the board?
@mattbcheck No, lichess tracks you for multiple moves. If you cheat on 3 or more moves in a row, you're caught I think.
@Koustav123456 I don't understand why you would have to play against a person to study... Why not study the line in the analysis board in your own time?
Forgive my stupidity, but I thought using an engine to find my best moves is cheating.I am at a loss to see why playing OTB tourny makes it ok to use an engine online. The two are not related.
You might want to use the same opening repertoire for both, or at least overlapping repertoires. And if you're an IM, you're probably going to want to use an engine to prepare for your OTB games.

#26 gave the options, but I'd add another one:
5) Just resign the correspondence game before running the engine on it.
@bunyip

He was using an engine to assist in his database opening review in preparation for an OTB tournament that happened to be in his correspondence game that the opening sparked his remembrance to review it before the upcoming tournament. Unfortunately the Lichess rules and system prevent players from this type of behavior, whatever the intentions, as the system only detects probable cheating (having the same opening in your game on lichess with the lichess database and engine analysis going).

The circumstances are unfortunate and the solution is that you shouldn’t use lichess engine to analyze position(s), even openings, that are present in your games. Whether it’s move 7 or 32, the Lichess rules and cheat detection system prohibit such behavior. Consider for every situation like this, the majority of situations benefit from this.

@Koustav123456 That said I hope you have a great OTB tournament and continued fun on Lichess!

Yeah and anyways, in correspondence, you have opening explorer, which is usually enough.
