Is it rude to flag your opponent in longer time controls?

I'll take the other side.

I think if you get beat on the board you should resign.

Even if you decide to flag them and you are successful , you still lost the actual game imo

At some point ... you were losing so bad that you stopped playing chess and started playing keepaway.

Its a cowardly move ... Especially in a casual game.
#11.

Time is a part of chess, when chess is played with time.

If you have a losing position on the board, but win on the clock, you win the chess game.
In my opinion even in longer time controls if you're opponent uses a too match time they are going to flag, it's part of the game.
So in longer time controls you should probably focus more on winning on the board than winning on time, but if you're opponent didn't use their time as well as you did, than sure! play for the flag! it's their problem they spent too match time!
To play on in a position with K+B vs K+N for 25 moves is indeed not very good sport. If you do this in an OTB tournament, everyone will think you are a jerk.

Online such manners do not exist, mainly because you will never see your opponent again. So everyone is flagging the most ridiculous positions and most people simply don´'t care anymore. But good sport is something different.
If there is an increment, yes.
If the position is a theoretical draw, I would say yes.
Chess is a 3 dimensional game - 2 spacial dimensions and 1 time dimension. There is no such thing as "I had a winning position on the board". I don't even understand why this topic (or the topic of takebacks) gets debated frequently.

Did Kasparov complain that he got flagged? Did he ask for takebacks?

Does anybody feel entitled to have more time than their opponent? Complaining about being flagged is feeling entitled. Just accept all rules of the game.

Also, even if you had bad internet connection, don't expect not to be flagged. If you have bad internet once in a month, that is ok, it is should not affect you much. If you are having bad internet connection daily, you should complain to your internet service provider, not on Lichess.

In my opinion, you really ask for this when you play a time control like 10+0 (one of the reasons I think it's a poor tc). Rapid or classical and 0 second increment don't mix well for this reason. I think flagging is fine in blitz or faster but in rapid and classical it feels very out of place to me which is why I play with 5 second increment minimum in those time controls when I have the choice. All that being said, if you play rapid or classical with 0 second increment and get flagged, that's on you and you can't throw a fit about it and hate on someone for flagging you. If someone has a problem with it, then maybe they should find a new time control like 10+5 or 15+10.

Some people do like rapid and classical with 0 second increment though (like 10+0 and 30+0). As to why they do, I have no idea and I personally don't get it but that's a fine opinion I suppose.
Chess was invented in early 7th century...

Flagging was invented in London, 1883

Flagging to win in a losing position is no longer "chess" imo.

You're playing a different game at that point ...

You're really saying ... " I cant win at chess , but instead of admitting that , Im going to change the game to me just running away and you trying to catch me. "

That's what your really winning at .. you won at being a coward.

Not the actual game of chess.

Id rather admit defeat and go out like a Samurai.

In the end , do what you want I guess.....
