What is a "bartalaven" in chess?

I'm spelling it wrong but i believe it's when you leave the board in a tournament. And it is named after a chess player. I just saw the term used by Agadmator.
Curt von Bardeleben. The player gained notoriety by apparently putting on his hat and walking out of the tournament hall when he had a losing position at the Hastings tournament in 1895.
Just a little curiosity, is it polite to play your move in OTB and then get up and see the games of other players, even after your opponent played his move?
It's not impolite but the better question is if it benefits your play (or not ...)

If I remember correctly I read somewhere he said he walked out because he wasn't happy with the behavior of the spectators.
