An average how much calorie of energy required for a 1 hour chess game?
Do you mean one hour total or one hour each side?
For the first alternative,it's a medium pizza + one 6-pack.It gets negatively exponential after that.
The SI unit is Joule but nevermind. Just be careful that we talk about kilo calories (kcal).

Moreover, there's a basic consumption of say 2000 kcal (men, women different). So we are talking about the over-all consumption or just the chess offset?

If you win a game with your favourite opening, well-known strategies you will hardly burn any calories at all, just food for thoughts.
Not a wrong thread...Perfect post...I read it completely... every chess player experienced those difficulties mentioned in the article in their play life...Chess looks complicated in this aspect only...Playing or knowledge nothing..But sustaining with good health is considered to be important...I am not saying every player should do it..But proper playing requires good health..Best example is MIKHAIL TAL...Just due to excessive smoking caused him early exit...Picking right composure of health ..Examples ..Magnus, Caruana, Anand...
I thought that the brain was very efficient, and was not as much a calorie burner as muscles are. even if you frown very hard throughout the game.

Chess is still a sedentary game.

Maybe standing, or VR Chess, where you have to lift the pieces, or have a fencing match to decide if the piece is actually going through the move, but otherwise, that TED talk, must be one of those expert opinion not based on statistical evidence. Perhaps compared to other activities like watching TV....

But i may have read or heard wrong about the brain/muscle calorie consumption, and it may have been just a relative statement i took for absolute.
