The only reason I believe chess.com is bigger is simply because of the domain, it's more accessible, due to this, most of the big names will base most of their playing there leading others to play there.
This doesn't necessarily mean it's any better, it has a confusing UI (Lichess easily beats it) and is more of a money grab (unline Lichess, they only have a Patreon system).
The mainline here is if you want to play/view better Chess, go to chess.com, if you want a more high-quality, easy to navigate experience, pick Lichess.

Lichess.org is the best!! chess.com sucks because there's gazillons ads you have to pay you can't create team it doesn't have a cheat dection as good as lichess and chess.com no one awnser's to my forum post
