I think it is "libre" in french, which means "free" and it is pronounced "lee", not "lie".

Being most here likely in United States you'd think the derivation would be from a word commonly used here. So how about "literal", "little", or "live"?

I heard of that statue. I could ask if you heard of the lithograph without additional wording and it wouldn't be clear if there were some substance to it.
