About me

I am a 26-year-old National Master living in Metro Detroit. I love to play, study, and teach chess. My personal goals in chess are rather simple: to become a better player. I want to help you on your improvement journey as well!

Playing experience

2014 Alabama State Champion
2017 World Open u2200 4th Place
2019 Michigan Action Champion
2021 Circle City Open Co-Champion

Teaching experience

I have worked with students both privately and in groups. All ages and skill levels are welcome!

Other experiences

I love to teach and have tutored students in chemistry and physics in college, though my favorite subject of course is chess! Nonetheless, regardless the subject, I can take concepts that are initially difficult to grasp and help you with both understanding and application.

Best skills

I excel in slower time controls: I am consistently top 10 classical and have peaked as high as #1. As opposed to blitz/bullet where decisions are made primarily on intuition, longer time controls enable players to supplement their intuition with concrete analysis. I will teach you how to analyze positions effectively so that you can make better decisions in your games.

Teaching methodology

Chess skill is the intersection of knowledge, technique, and ability. Knowledge is what you know: opening theory, tactical patterns, theoretical endgames, and positional principles and themes. Technique is how you think: it is how you calculate, blunder-check, the process of decision making, and habits (both good and bad!). Ability is what you can do: how deep you can calculate, speed in a time scramble, and some of the things that can be chalked up as "talent".

While there are countless coaches and sources that can share valuable knowledge, I want to take a holistic approach to your game and fundamentally align your mindset and thinking process toward chess improvement.

Motivation is necessary for improvement, but enjoyment is necessary for motivation. At the end of the day, for the process to be enjoyable, you have to see results! With this in mind, I want to make our lessons fun, applicable, and impactful.

I use lichess studies for teaching and Skype or Discord for communication. There will be personalized assignments/homework to amplify your improvement. If you are interested in taking lessons, please send me a message on lichess and I'll get back you you as soon as possible!
