FM Derek

Hi all, my name is Derek Wu, and I currently reside in California. I mostly offer individual lessons, but I would not be opposed to doing group lessons either (Group Lessons are $30/hr per person).

Over 12 years of competitive playing experience.

I have over 7 years of teaching experience, and I currently tend to a couple of private students per week. Most of my students see drastic improvement within the first couple of lessons.

I have been an active coach for many years now and have also instructed at many chess camps.

I make sure that all of my students get what they are looking for. I guide the student so that not only do they improve under my supervision, but I also create a routine for them so that they can also maximize their learning in the other days when we are apart. I put numerous hours aside in preparation for my lesson time with my students. You may also find that I often times pause every few mins to ask if you are following along, as I always try to make sure everything I teach is digestible and crystal clear.

I take a very straightforward and simple approach when it comes to teaching. In our first few lessons I will assess your strengths and weaknesses by analyzing some of your past games, then I will present a database of positions specific to your problem so that your problem will not only be fixed, but you will be eager to play those kinds of positions. I will also create a personal repertoire for you, keeping in mind your style and how to obtain the kinds of positions you strive in. Of course, special teaching requests are always welcome, but this is what I find works best for almost all of my students.
