  1. ErunaMe (2.d4) Years ago, I would just play the mainlines, with success despite not knowing theory. But my openings been bad lately.
  2. ErunaMe (2...cxd4) (2.d4) So I'm giving some slightly unsound aggression a try.
  3. ErunaMe (3...dxc3) (3.c3) I have never actually played this before, let's hope this doesn't backfire.
  4. mikibene it seems like an old good smith morra, let's hope it does not get too wild
  5. ErunaMe (4.Nxc3) If nothing else, I seem to have simultanously caught my opponent completely off guard.
  6. mikibene now I just need to remember my theory
  7. mikibene (6 Bb4) I have never played this line of the Morra, but it seemed soundish
  8. ErunaMe (7...Nge7) Allowing Bb4 was probably really bad.
  9. jcarmody "The Smith-Morra is the soundishest response to the Sicilian defense." - Marc Esserman, probably
  10. ErunaMe (7...Nge7) The question is, how insane is the sacrifice Nd5 here.
  11. jcarmody That's the eternal question for the SM-gambitteer...
  12. ErunaMe (7...Nge7) I think it works, and otherwise, atleast the spectators will be entertained.
  13. jcarmody yolo
  14. ssyx yep, all about the spectators!
  15. mikibene (8) Oops, I did not expect this
  16. mikibene so now the question is to take or not to take
  17. jcarmody Extra credit for both players for whispering to us.
  18. jcarmody The psychological aspect of white's attack in the SMG is not to be underestimated.
  19. jcarmody It could be horrible, but black think's white is onto something.
  20. mikibene the good point about NOT taking is that the knights move is wasted
  21. mikibene (8) and I can continue developing keeping the pawn
  22. mikibene the pros about taking is well... a free knight
  23. exirk (8.Nd5) I don't think the sac is sound
  24. exirk (8.Nd5) exd5 exd4 Na5
  25. ErunaMe (8.Nd5) Maybe my opponent can just castle though.
  26. jcarmody Me neither. I usually think it's good if the B can prevent castling. I haven't got a good feel for sac in these positions.
  27. exirk (8.Nd5) The main issue is, Bishop on b4 prevents Re1
  28. exirk (8.Nd5) I think that's the main motif why the sac is not sound
  29. mikibene I think this can slow down white enough
  30. ErunaMe (9...Na5) I missed that black could move his knight there somehow, my calculations are amazing as ever.
  31. mikibene worst case I can give back the piece
  32. mikibene the thing is that d5 is blocking the bishop and Bb4 is stopping Re1
  33. mikibene let's hope it holds
  34. exirk (9...Na5) Even if black couldn't play Na5, the sac still wouldn't be sound I think
  35. exirk (9...Na5) 9... Nb8 is still playable, the main point of the sac which is Re1 is still not possible
  36. exirk (9...Na5) in general before calculating concrete lines, it's important to first do a general check on both sides development. Are we ahead
  37. mikibene and if it gets complicated in the centre I can bring my king to the kingside and bring in the rook with h5, h4 and so
  38. exirk (9...Na5) by enough tempo to make a sac possible? Generally you can arrive at an intuition that a sac probably can't work here just via intu
  39. mikibene (9) let's just see how I miscalculated everything
  40. ErunaMe (9...Na5) I don't think d6 works now, but anything else just leaves me down a piece. I think.
  41. mikibene (10) I also did not expect that
  42. tommeketoch (10) Bd3 seems to at least give white amazing practical chances
  43. mikibene (10) should I just castle? If I do that then I am not behind in developement any more and I keep the passer on d7
  44. tommeketoch (10) (10) (10) Nxc4 is now winning. After dxe7 Bxe7 Qd4 d5 Qxg7 Bf6 Re1 Be6 black stabilizes and will go long
  45. mkac (10) Yes, Nxc4 looks good to me, too.
  46. mikibene let's try to hold to the piece
  47. ssyx (10) Bxf7+ ...might as well go all in!
  48. RedzoneNova i was thinking Qd5 and Ng5 first, lol
  49. tommeketoch (10) after Qd5 just Nxc4?
  50. mkac (10) qd5 nxc4 ng5 o-o
  51. mkac (10) Maybe Qd2+ first?
  52. mkac (10) Sorry Qe2+
  53. tommeketoch (10) I don't see anything after Kf8
  54. tommeketoch (10) but maybe just the calm Bd3
  55. tommeketoch (10) treat a3
  56. mkac (10) Bd3 O-O a3 Bxd6 Bxg6 hxg6 Qxd6 and Black keeps pawn up for free?
  57. mkac (10) Or the end can be: Bxg6 Bxh2+ Nxh2 hxg6 and Black has ttwo pawns?
  58. mkac (10) Qe2+ at least compromises the Black king for a longer time, however I don't see a win either.
  59. exirk (10...Ng6) Qe2+ seems like the only practical choice in my eyes
  60. tommeketoch (10) it is bad for white yes, but white needs to shift to survive modus it looks to me
  61. tommeketoch (10) opening has gone horrible wrong
  62. mkac (10) I am thinking if Bxf7 Kxf7 Ng5+ followed by Qf3 or Qd5 can lead to anything.
  63. ssyx wahey!
  64. mkac (11) We will see :).
  65. ssyx (12) a3/Bg5 were interesting perhaps
  66. ErunaMe (13.a3) After the simple Bxd6, Qxd6, Qe7 I'm probably just losing.
  67. exirk (13.a3) Bxd6 Qxd6 Qd5 followed by Re1 could be interesting
  68. exirk (13.a3) but agreed probably still lost
  69. exirk (13.a3) Bxd6 Qxd6 Qe7 that is Qd5
  70. mkac (13) Re1 would also require to protect e1 first.
  71. GreenPterodactylus Then Nc6 Be3 threatening stuff
  72. GreenPterodactylus after Qd5
  73. mkac (13) So maybe Qd2 instead of Qd5?
  74. ErunaMe (13.a3) Maybe Bxd6, Qxd6, Qe7, Qd5, Nc6, Bf4? I still got a few threats maybe.
  75. GreenPterodactylus Bf4 Nxf4?
  76. GreenPterodactylus Or am i missing smth
  77. mkac (13) Nxf4 seems all right
  78. ErunaMe (14...Qe7) oh wait, the knight covers that square.
  79. mikibene I am not sure white has enough pieces to finish the attack
  80. GreenPterodactylus Probably black is better
  81. exirk (14...Qe7) yeah definitely, but positions like these still need diligence because often times it just takes 1 mistake to hang 1 move tactic
  82. GreenPterodactylus Also black is playing without rooks or light square bishop as far as I'm concerned
  83. l177 (15) Qd5 Nc6 Be3 seems like a sensible approach for white
  84. GreenPterodactylus Qd5 Nc6 Be3 threatening Bc5 winning the queen and Re1
  85. GreenPterodactylus its tricky
  86. mikibene (15) So, counting it is 2 attackers vs 3 defenders, but sure, chess is not only basic math
  87. GreenPterodactylus I really don't see how you dealt with Bc5 after Be3
  88. GreenPterodactylus d6
  89. GreenPterodactylus thats how
  90. ssyx yeah like that lol
  91. exirk (16.Bd2) just spitballing but what about Qe5
  92. GreenPterodactylus after be3?
  93. mikibene Ok, so now, I am seeing some funny ideas on the f8-a3 diag
  94. GreenPterodactylus or now
  95. ssyx Qf7#?
  96. exirk (16.Bd2) oops lol
  97. mikibene (16) and also a rook coming to e1 let's say immediately
  98. mikibene the question is Qe5 helps or wastes a tempo?
  99. exirk (16.Bd2) Noooo don't play Qe5 hahahah
  100. mikibene (16) one can also consider that Qe5 is mate for white
  101. GreenPterodactylus great minds think alike
  102. GreenPterodactylus lol
  103. exirk (16.Bd2) d6 here could work
  104. mkac (16) Maybe d6?
  105. exirk (16.Bd2) develop the bishop quick
  106. mkac (16) Yes
  107. mkac (16) And make room for the queen on c7 or d7
  108. mkac (16) Otherwise Re1 Qf6 and Bc3
  109. l177 (16) (16) (16) In case black played a random move like h6 white could have forced a draw with checks on f5 and c5
  110. GreenPterodactylus isn't black in trouble after Re1 Qd7 Ne6+?
  111. mikibene this should help the bishop aid in the defense
  112. GreenPterodactylus and if Re1 Qf6 Bc2
  113. exirk (17.Rfe1) (16.Bd2) Qc6
  114. exirk (17.Rfe1) Qc7
  115. ErunaMe (17.Rfe1) What is black going to do about Re3-f3, am I winning?
  116. exirk (17.Rfe1) Qc7 Re3 Ne5?
  117. mkac (17) Nge5 or Nce5? I would think Nge5 to make g6-Kg7-Re8/f8 possible
  118. exirk (17...Qf6) I actually like this better
  119. GreenPterodactylus What about Ne6 here?
  120. exirk (17...qf6) ne6 bxn rxb qd8?
  121. GreenPterodactylus then Rae1 or even Qf5 first?
  122. l177 Qf5+ Kg8 Qd5 Kf8 and repeat?
  123. mkac (17) What about this: Re6 Bxe6 Nxe6+ Ke8 Re1
  124. l177 Nge7
  125. mkac (17) Or Ne5
  126. mkac (17) Maybe just 18.Re2 followed by Rae1?
  127. GreenPterodactylus am I the only one that thinks white is better?
  128. GreenPterodactylus like, I wouldn't be looking for repetitions here
  129. mkac (17) I was thinking so, too, but the time is ticking and I cannot see a win.
  130. l177 Its definitely easier to play, but there probably is a correct defense
  131. l177 (17) If I was white I would be very happy with a draw after that game
  132. GreenPterodactylus oooh interesting
  133. ErunaMe (18.Re6) No time, and can't quite find the solution.
  134. exirk (18.Re6) BxR NxR and then Ke7-d7
  135. exirk (18.Re6) Oooooh there's Bg5 yikes
  136. exirk (18.Re6) So Ke8 d7 then
  137. l177 (18) oh after Ke8 there is Nc7+
  138. exirk (19...Ke8) (19.Nxe6+) that's fine, white has sacced a lot of material arleady
  139. l177 (19) But youre still down material
  140. mikibene this can go anyway
  141. exirk (19...Ke8) In hindsight maybe if black played 10.. Bxd6, would have avoided a lot of complication
  142. l177 Qxd6 and threaten mate
  143. l177 (19) nvm
  144. mikibene at least the bishop is not in the way anymore, and Nc7 I still keep the piece
  145. mkac (20) Or 10. ... Nxc4
  146. mkac (20) Qe5 now?
  147. mikibene my feeling is that a lot of white pieces are uncomfortable now, but there can always be tactics
  148. GreenPterodactylus now its lost for white
  149. mikibene (22) white has to exchange something now, and my king feels safe
  150. exirk (22...Nge7) f4 for one last hurrah?
  151. mikibene longest 22 moves of my life
  152. mkac (23) Qxg5
  153. mikibene I should be able to hold it now
  154. l177 (23) now its absolutely lost
  155. GreenPterodactylus what an exciting game
  156. GreenPterodactylus i think 18. Re6 was bad
  157. mikibene I want to avoid any funny things with Qe6 and the knight is not getting out
  158. Hindemith Qf6 is clinical, nice
  159. exirk GG what a nice game
  160. l177 (24) gg
  161. mkac (24) Thanks both of you for the exciting game!
  162. GreenPterodactylus ggs
  163. GreenPterodactylus great game
  164. mikibene Wow... it was nerv-wrecking!
  165. mikibene I think that I should have taken the bishop on 9 instead of Ng6
  166. mikibene It probably allowed to solidify without headache
  167. mikibene so many blunders according to SF
  168. mikibene Thanks @ErunaMe for a very cool game!
  169. ssyx gg
  170. ErunaMe Now to spend the next 20 years trying to understand what was even happening, and if I was at any point not lost.
  171. mikibene the knight sac felt pretty scary
  172. mikibene I think that for most of the game white was having all the fun
  173. mikibene Specially after Bxf7
  174. ErunaMe For most of the game, I was not seeing how I'm having remotely enough compensation.
  175. ErunaMe Bxf7, was mere desperation.
  176. mikibene It complicated the game a lot
  177. mikibene It was probably unnecessary if I had done Nxc4 insteag of Ng6
  178. ErunaMe I was expecting Nxc4, or Bxd6
  179. mikibene Yes, I also don't have a concrete line about why Ng6
  180. mikibene I think now I need to look at the game a little bit more in detail. Gotta go now, but thanks!
