  1. Sleightly Right but on c4 black has nothing. He cant take and he has to fear c5 if his pieces arent set up right
  2. RazorBoy But Slieghty, you may be right, playing c5 may not have been necessary...I'm just not as sure about it as you are :)
  3. RazorBoy I think white white had a great game even without the c5 move
  4. RazorBoy Hmmm, I thought maybe Na5.
  5. Sleightly c5 was not a bad move but it seems like all t did was ease blacks terrible position in comparison to developing and looking at g4 ideas
  6. Benedictine White has Bb4 rook rapping threats
  7. Benedictine Trapping, sorry on phone laptop taken off me to sort bloody printing chiad
  8. Benedictine Chaos
  9. RazorBoy Does black have some edge here?
  10. RazorBoy 27...Rb8 looks natural
  11. RazorBoy Blacks move looks good too
  12. RazorBoy 28. Bb4 Bxb4 axb4 Rb8 b5
  13. RazorBoy trying for a R+5 vs R+4 ending
  14. RazorBoy White seems to be in trouble here.
  15. KFerapont Pawns falling
  16. RazorBoy Which one to take?
  17. Sleightly I would have taken the passer but im a chicken
  18. RazorBoy :)
  19. SilentKnighte5 that white rook is trapped
  20. SilentKnighte5 re1 seemed better to defend the B and push the passer
  21. Sleightly Rf1?
  22. SilentKnighte5 re1
  23. SilentKnighte5 now the white rook can move to the first rank
  24. Sleightly No the white rook isnt trapped im saying
  25. SilentKnighte5 it was trapped before ra3
  26. SilentKnighte5 now it can participate against the d pawn
  27. RazorBoy d3 for black here?
  28. KFerapont seems strong
  29. Lord_axe I'll would have put my money one black here
  30. SilentKnighte5 white's pawns are kind of awful
  31. RazorBoy d3 again
  32. Sleightly Pretty sure white winning until rf3 maybe
  33. RazorBoy I agree about 15. Rf3
  34. RazorBoy someone once said passed pawns must be pushed
  35. Lord_axe Why not d3`?
  36. SilentKnighte5 white's defense seems much easier now, but g3 is still a sore spot
  37. Sleightly White probably holds now
  38. RazorBoy white always has Rd3 now to defend g3
  39. Lord_axe d3 and d2 looked to be the criticial line to me
  40. RazorBoy I think white holds too now
  41. SilentKnighte5 ra2+ forces the king to h1
  42. SilentKnighte5 actually maybe not
  43. SilentKnighte5 trading pawns here is good for white
  44. Sleightly h5 and mating threats start to appear
  45. SilentKnighte5 hard to make happen though
  46. SilentKnighte5 rook must stay on first rank
  47. Sleightly Black king can advance
  48. SilentKnighte5 both sides have unoptimal pawn placement
  49. SilentKnighte5 so this is dangerous
  50. SilentKnighte5 bxf4
  51. SilentKnighte5 rxe4
  52. SilentKnighte5 rxg3+
  53. SilentKnighte5 in fact i think it's losing due to the discovery
  54. SilentKnighte5 that's why i said the king was forced to h1 after ra2+
  55. RazorBoy but blacks bishop will be hanging
  56. SilentKnighte5 aha forgot about this move
  57. Aliquantus Bxg3 was maybe good in that line?
  58. RazorBoy ya
  59. Sleightly Bxg3 seems straightforward
  60. RazorBoy yep
  61. SilentKnighte5 double aha
  62. Sleightly Black can still win in bishop endgame. King is advanced and connected passers
  63. RazorBoy yeah, white will have a hard time
  64. SilentKnighte5 he probably missed bd6
  65. Aliquantus so hxg is three connected passers
  66. Sleightly Take and now 3 connected passers
  67. Sleightly hey! No copying
  68. SilentKnighte5 h5
  69. Aliquantus clearly i wrote it first
  70. RazorBoy great minds think alike, you two
  71. Sleightly Lag
  72. SilentKnighte5 actually i dont like h5
  73. Sleightly King gets trapped offside
  74. SilentKnighte5 pawns being connected helps the defender of opposite color bishop ending
  75. SilentKnighte5 athough not quite the same with 3 of them
  76. Sleightly H5 take take kf4 0-1
  77. SilentKnighte5 i think pushing to a6 is bes
  78. SilentKnighte5 best
  79. SilentKnighte5 yeah now white gets 2 split passers
  80. SilentKnighte5 oh wait be+
  81. Benedictine Interesting endgame
  82. SilentKnighte5 interesting for black, yes :)
  83. RazorBoy f5 would not have been my first choice
  84. Aliquantus huh, no time to take h4 for black
  85. SilentKnighte5 yeah probably not
  86. SilentKnighte5 maybe a6 here
  87. SilentKnighte5 black king is short of mobility at the moment
  88. RazorBoy f5 may have been a colossal blunder
  89. SilentKnighte5 this is actually better for white
  90. Benedictine Yes I thought so
  91. RazorBoy constant time pressure will do that to you.
  92. RazorBoy black may be losing here
  93. SilentKnighte5 yes white has a won game here i think
  94. SilentKnighte5 a6 or h5
  95. Benedictine yes the bishop controls f1 and just push a and h
  96. RazorBoy a6, then h5
  97. SilentKnighte5 the pawns being split makes it hard to defend
  98. SilentKnighte5 connected passers are easier to stop
  99. Lord_axe I guess f5 was the mistake
  100. SilentKnighte5 makes it too easy to blockade
  101. SilentKnighte5 very nice for laurent
  102. yago666 49... e5 h5 f3 h6 f2 h7 e4 is probably lost for black but interesting
  103. RazorBoy maybe black can hold the draw here
  104. RazorBoy but yes, black was winning before f5
  105. SilentKnighte5 draw only if white blunders here
  106. yago666 not so sure
  107. RazorBoy what if black played f3, followed by Bf4
  108. SilentKnighte5 a pawn queening square is the right color
  109. RazorBoy white has the correct rook pawn
  110. Aliquantus yeah, that's the key :(
  111. SilentKnighte5 black must be shell shocked right now
  112. Aliquantus and no time to switch sides
  113. RazorBoy he's probably thinking about those 3 connected passers he had a few minutes ago
  114. SilentKnighte5 yup
  115. SilentKnighte5 this is the part of the game when you go back over your score sheet and just think WTF?
  116. RazorBoy We've all been there.
  117. SilentKnighte5 Indeed
  118. SilentKnighte5 very good lesson in opposite colored bishop ending though
  119. SilentKnighte5 connected passers are bad, against conventional chess wisdom
  120. Aliquantus well, they're better than passers one file apart, right?
  121. SilentKnighte5 dagger
  122. RazorBoy Brutal game.
  123. SilentKnighte5 well done sir :)
  124. KFerapont Bd4+Kb6 would have been a draw still
  125. SilentKnighte5 on what move?
  126. KFerapont oh nope, nevermind
  127. hetraie wp to my opponent and sorry to my teammates, the endgame was so bad on my part
  128. hicetnunc lucky as always... :-)
  129. hicetnunc 14.c5? was a mistake I think - I wanted to kill counterplay, but I just created more... :-(
  130. hicetnunc so maybe direct 14.g4 or 14.Rf3-h3 - not sure. Maybe Rf3-h3 is safer
  131. hetraie my c5 was bad not yours apparently :)
  132. RazorBoy There was a debate about c5...I liked it and someone else didn't. It appears I was wrong.
  133. RazorBoy c5 for white, that is
  134. RazorBoy hetraie, we all fall victim to time pressure occasionally
  135. RazorBoy Always easier to kibitz thaN TO ACTUALLY PLAY :)
  136. SilentKnighte5 I like 15 Qf3 I think
  137. hetraie I guess you're right, but chess is tough. I'm pretty sure I'd have laughed if I'd watched such a game
  138. SilentKnighte5 14 Qf3 that is. Instead of c5
  139. hetraie I wish I could find some nice simple moves like 42..Ra2
  140. SilentKnighte5 yes ra2 is hurtful
  141. hicetnunc 14.c5+15.Rf3? was probably the worst combo of 2 plausible moves I could play
  142. hicetnunc 14.c5+15.g4 maybe, as RazorBoy suggests - at least is consistent
  143. SilentKnighte5 they're natural looking moves
  144. hicetnunc during the game I thought I would have some Bxh7+ or some attack, but that was a bit lazy
  145. SilentKnighte5 Qf3 Nbd7 Bb2 Bb6 Rfc1, IMO
  146. SilentKnighte5 b6 not bb6
  147. hicetnunc That's adaptive chess SK : switching to a different plan before it's too late, something I'm not very good at :-)
  148. SilentKnighte5 it's hard to change ideas once you get it in your head to play a certain way
  149. SilentKnighte5 the structure is very pillsbury attack looking and qf3 is natural there
  150. hicetnunc true, but this is an even better version as e4 is under control, so you can try for Qh5 directly
  151. hicetnunc either Rf3-h3 and g4-g5 or g4-g5 directly (which was my first idea, but I god cold feet, fearing some dxc4 opening of the center)
  152. hicetnunc but maybe Jim's c5+g4 is actually best
  153. SilentKnighte5 fix the structure with cxd5 first :)
  154. hicetnunc but cxd5exd5 and black controls h3 with his bishop
  155. SilentKnighte5 you plan on attacking down the h-file? f-file feels more natural
  156. hicetnunc I don't know - pawn on g5 + Qh5-Rh3 looks deadly
  157. SilentKnighte5 stockfish thinks you should take on d5 and play e4!
  158. hicetnunc Well, I'm not playing the same century chess than Stockfish :-)
  159. hicetnunc I'm trying to get a grip on 19th century chess...
  160. SilentKnighte5 at least in the position i gave earlier with qf3 and bb2
  161. Sleightly I think the simple Qc2 was best honestly
  162. Sleightly I put some analysis back on move 14
  163. hicetnunc I'll look at it calmly - at least I know where the critical position is :-)
  164. SilentKnighte5 black's position already looks critical on move 13, amazing
  165. hicetnunc Well, I thought I had a much better position yes
  166. SilentKnighte5 Well you converted :)
  167. Sleightly gg, tough games guys
  168. Benedictine 14.c5 computer best move.
  169. Benedictine big debate around c5
  170. hicetnunc if 14.c5 is correct, then I should probably follow it up with Jim's 15.g4
  171. Benedictine yes that was our thinking.
  172. Sleightly I dont think it is any better than qc2 or qf3 but it certainly takes away a decision from black
  173. Sleightly Computers overvalue space so of course they love c5
  174. Benedictine Sure, yes but c5 is not an error though based on that.
  175. Sleightly no, but if you have a choice of two moves, one of which leaves black making tough decisions and one that makes the decision for him
  176. Sleightly there is something to be said for an easier position to play from an idea standpoint
  177. SilentKnighte5 i agree
  178. Sleightly And when I let an engine run they value c5 no better, sometimes a little worse, than the queen moves
  179. SilentKnighte5 but there's a benefit to attacking from a simplified structure when it's easier to identify counterplay alaso
  180. Benedictine yes I see what you mean, keep the options open.
  181. SilentKnighte5 but laurent knows im a fan of that carlsbad structure so im biased :D
  182. Benedictine Yes, I just like simple ideas, close that down then attack the king etc,
  183. Sleightly my only wins this season were because i played a trickier move and my opponents blundered... i have yet to outplay anyone :(
  184. hicetnunc I like the Ne5 attacking set-ups too :-)
  185. SilentKnighte5 I've never played a Pillsbury from the QGD. Maybe I will add that to my repertoire as an alternative.
  186. Benedictine Yes good idea to keep the board complex and give your opponents chance to blunder, I know what you mean
  187. hicetnunc Pillsbury attack is one of the only attacking schemes where you can attack the opponent king almost without fearing any counterplay
  188. Benedictine Just 14.g4 then
  189. SilentKnighte5 i think it requires cooperation from opponent though. Generally hard to get Ne5 and f4 in before Black has put a knight on d7
  190. SilentKnighte5 Yusupov thought enough of that structure to put it in his training manual though
  191. hicetnunc Wll, in practice I get Ne5 in more often than not, even against relatively strong opposition
  192. Benedictine I was unsure of 16.Nxd7, giving up the knight in the centre. What was the thinking there, I might have overlooked something.
  193. hicetnunc My thinking was 17.Bxh7+ but then I realized it didn't work :-)
  194. Benedictine ah right.
  195. Benedictine Yes it looked good.
  196. hicetnunc basically I gain some time to attack h7, even if Bxh7+ fails, I though another attacking move like Rh3 or Qc2 would be okay
  197. Benedictine yes I see it sort of gains a tempo in attack
  198. Benedictine Though in the particular position it didn't work out.
  199. hicetnunc I'm not sure waht I should do at this stage though - black is threatening to take on c5 and 16.c6 runs into Nb8
  200. KFerapont Great reading these notes. Interesting game!
