  1. Aliquantus Yeah, helps when you've played it before as well. :)
  2. TonyRo Very true.
  3. TonyRo I was a bit more worried about being ready for 4.Nf3.
  4. TonyRo I think it's an objectively better move, but you do have to be ready for a lot of Black systems if you play that way.
  5. Aliquantus Yup, agreed, and I'm really not. I never got the Alekhine otb so never put any work into it
  6. TonyRo Yeah you and most everyone else, don't feel too bad about that. :)
  7. Aliquantus I've played Nf3 online many times as well, but I don't really know what I'm doing there either. :P
  8. TonyRo I looked at your games a bit there, I thought you had a reasonable handle on it. :)
  9. MrTwoEyes I used to play the Alekhine's a lot, I gave it up because I was having trouble against the Four Pawns
  10. TonyRo Yeah that's a tough line.
  11. MrTwoEyes I always played g5 after f4
  12. MrTwoEyes The Planinc variation
  13. TonyRo I think Black basically has to head down the absolute main lines into some really sharp stuff to be objectively equal.
  14. MrTwoEyes Ever seen that one?
  15. TonyRo And White can force draws there.
  16. MrTwoEyes Yeah
  17. MrTwoEyes That's why I don't like it
  18. TonyRo Yes, though I'm not sure I believe in it as more than just an occasional surprise weapon.
  19. MrTwoEyes Yeah I don't think I'd ever play it OTB
  20. MrTwoEyes It is interesting though
  21. MrTwoEyes Maybe give it a whirl in a video sometime, Tony
  22. MrTwoEyes Would make for some very interesting viewing :D
  23. TonyRo lol, this is true.
  24. TonyRo I have to get a 4PA game first, which is rare.
  25. MrTwoEyes Indeed
  26. MrTwoEyes And you're playing the French recently, which makes it especially difficult to get the 4PA
  27. TonyRo Also true!
  28. Aliquantus You're right, b4 was played before in some games, but Be2 first is more normal, or h3.
  29. TonyRo Yeah I think in my notes I only have Be2 or h3.
  30. Aliquantus I did consider 12. h3 actually...
  31. TonyRo But now I have to expand them!
  32. TonyRo 12.h3 is very reasonable.
  33. MrTwoEyes The comp likes 12. b4
  34. Aliquantus And it does make sense, I wasn't surprised to see Bg4
  35. TonyRo I think Black must play ...Bf5-e4 at some point.
  36. TonyRo Yeah
  37. MrTwoEyes But I think 12. h3 is a better practical choice
  38. MrTwoEyes 12. h3 is a bit like the Gurgenidze Caro-Kann
  39. MrTwoEyes It's interesting how the Alekhine's can resemble so many different defences to 1. e4, but rarely will it transpose directly into one of them
  40. TonyRo It probably transposes back to mainstream openings more than others.
  41. TonyRo You can reach Viennas and Frenches from the Alekhine. Hard to say that 1...e5 or the Sicilian transpose to other openings pretty much ever.
  42. MrTwoEyes True
  43. MrTwoEyes I'm a religious 1. d4 player, so transpositions are 2nd nature to me
  44. TonyRo Indeed.
  45. TonyRo Try playing 1.Nf3 or 1.c4, it only gets worse.
  46. TonyRo Anyway, gotta run, dinner time. Good game Aliquantus, see you dudes and dudettes around. :)
  47. MrTwoEyes Yup I have played 1. c4 for a long time too
  48. MrTwoEyes Later, Tro
  49. Aliquantus Thanks for the game and analysis afterwards, learnt lots! Good luck in future rounds.
  50. TonyRo You too!
