  1. Sonata2 oh man, havent played this variation in ages but decided to play it again for old times sake
  2. Sonata2 Simon Williams would be proud
  3. Lukhas what the heck is that
  4. s2004k1993 white's pawn breaks are either c4 or e6, Black's are f6 and c5.
  5. s2004k1993 Black wants Ba6 to trade his worst piece. I can't stop it, so 9.b4 Ba6 10.b5 cxb5 11.Nxb5 and white looks to be in a good position
  6. s2004k1993 I prefered 6.Be2 over 6.Bd3, so if Black ever plays c5, dxc5, d5 would be hanging
  7. Sonata2 9.b4 is surprisingly annoying, think ...e6 is okay, preparing to meet b5 with ...c5, which is what I probably want to prepare anyway
  8. s2004k1993 if 10...Qc7, c5 becomes impossible for black as there would be Nb5, Nd6 in response
  9. darkness01 curious why not b5 right away?
  10. s2004k1993 (11) it feels like I am making a strategic mistake pushing pawns on the queenside, but my goal is to provoke b5
  11. s2004k1993 white's dream is 12.a5 b5 13.Na2-c1-d3, c3
  12. Sonata2 [12] the big question is if I can play c5 here
  13. Sonata2 and I think I can
  14. s2004k1993 i was afraid of 12.a5 bxa5 13.Rxa5 c5, but I think I should have been okay with that...
  15. s2004k1993 wow! 12...c5
  16. Sonata2 risky move but I really want to break up white's center
  17. Sonata2 shaky queenside though, but no risk no fun!
  18. s2004k1993 15.Qa5 or g4
  19. s2004k1993 16...Nxd4 17.Nxd4 cxd4 18.Nd6 Kf8 19.Bb5 Qc7 20.Qf4 Nxe5 is a problem
  20. arbisto isnt there mate on f7 on that line?
  21. arbisto or i miss something
  22. arbisto yes i missed that
  23. arbisto n protects f7
  24. OutdoorTree and queen is defending laterally from c7
  25. arbisto yes silly me
  26. s2004k1993 I missed 19...Nxe5
  27. s2004k1993 but 19...Nxe5 20.Bxc6 Nf3 Kg2 and it seems over
  28. s2004k1993 if 19...Qc7 20.Bxd7 and Qxd4
  29. Sonata2 19.Qxc3 looks like a good choice, threatening Qh3
  30. Alex_1987 qx dc nxc8 rx bxd7, no?
  31. kjfoster17 that's what I thought Alex
  32. Alex_1987 nxe5 f4
  33. Sonata2 yikes, how did I miss that
  34. Alex_1987 or be7 actually
  35. Sonata2 I guess I get a couple of pawns for the piece, lot of fun to be had still
  36. Sonata2 do I have a repetition with Nf3+-Nh4+? dont mind a bailout tbh
  37. s2004k1993 23...Nxg4 24.Be8
  38. Sonata2 oh duh h5 is protected
  39. s2004k1993 i also have 23...Nxg4 24.Bc6 Rb8 25.Rab1
  40. arbisto setting up repetition in Be8
  41. arbisto if Be8
  42. Sonata2 need to keep up the pressure somehow
  43. Sonata2 his pieces lack coordination and they look pretty close to being suffocated
  44. Sonata2 maybe i can make that work with his time
  45. s2004k1993 i am worried about 26...Rb8
  46. darkness01 27 .. Bf8 would have been more direct?
  47. arbisto Bf8 would allow Bf6
  48. darkness01 ahhh
  49. arbisto f6?
  50. darkness01 yep
  51. arbisto white has re1 maybe
  52. arbisto i wish we could add 20 more minutes to both
  53. ahmt92 Yeah, this position deserves much more time
  54. Sonata2 god what a mess
  55. hicetnunc much easier to play for black though (33)
  56. hicetnunc but it looks like s2004 has good time management here
  57. ahmt92 Why not Rab1
  58. ahmt92 Is it blunder?
  59. arbisto yes
  60. arbisto great game
  61. Sonata2 what a game
  62. Sonata2 your b4 and a4 in the opening I felt were really strong
  63. s2004k1993 yeah, didn't expect c5 and it felt like very close to winning after that
  64. s2004k1993 thanks
  65. s2004k1993 I have never seen this opening before, so I was improvising
  66. Sonata2 yeah c5 was a big gamble
  67. Sonata2 thought I could hold everything and blowing up the center needed to happen at some point
  68. Sonata2 your pieces were all over the place at the end though
  69. s2004k1993 of course, I could do the exact same thing with 15.Bd3, completely overlooked it
  70. Sonata2 yeah I think I misrembered the opening a bit, perhaps I should look it up again
  71. Sonata2 because it didnt go as I expected/remembered
  72. s2004k1993 I was so surprised with 19...Qc3
  73. s2004k1993 I thought you just blundered, only later did I realize i had trouble extricating my pieces
  74. Sonata2 well it was a blunder
  75. Sonata2 somehow I overlooked that whole exchange there
  76. Sonata2 just thought the queen exchange was good and left it at that
  77. Sonata2 21.f4 apparently is winning, what a computer move
  78. s2004k1993 yeah...
  79. s2004k1993 I was expecting 19..Qc7 20.Bxd7 Qxd7 21.Qf4 with an unclear position, comp says +4!
  80. Sonata2 yeah that looks very unpleasant
  81. s2004k1993 well, anyway, thanks for the game and good luck in your remaining rounds
  82. Sonata2 no easy way to untangle at all
