hiding player names in kid mode

I don't see why this couldn't be a feature of kid mode. My 6 year old sister is getting into chess, and learning how to read. I wouldn't want her to ask me or my mother 'what does this word mean?' Because she saw the word 'fuck' or 'bitch' on lichess. She will learn one day, but I wouldn't want her to learn like that.

On the other hand, it could be difficult to make consistent, random usernames for everyone in kid mode. I don't know how technically feasible that would be.

I think there needs to be a little more understanding as to why people might want to shield minors from uncomfortable truths on a faceless site - much better to learn about the birds and the bees from your parents then from the user 'fuckedurmom69', and asking what it means.
"is there a way to do this or a similar thing from the user end? Like through CSS or Javascript?"

Sure, I'll write you a userscript.
#11 small children shouldn't be on the internet without supervision in any case. I cannot see why it isn't possible for the person to supervise their younger relative, or for a parent to do so.

One of the problems of modern day life is that small children are exposed to too much stuff that doesn't fit their age. If they were supervised better, we wouldn't have to 'dumb down' adult things.
Despite the best supervision, a bad username can always come up. Kid mode wouldn't affect the adults playing at all. It's not dumbing things down, it's making the site safer for kids, and you could even make it more fun by using animal names or something.
Meh that might appeal to 6 year olds... but at what point do kids not want to be "Giraffe34"?
Toutatis, I respect your opinion, thanks for contributing.

Unihedron, don't know what to say, I don't come across direct help offers like this very often, thank you very much :) And I hope that is not a big task for you and won't take much of your time.

Cynosure, good points and I can imagine this kind of feature being very useful in kid classes that use lichess as well, because this brings even more responsibility to chess teachers as the kids are not their own children. May be hard to believe but even in my country there are pre-school classes teaching chess, so at the very least there should be some options about this for the best possible teaching environment.

GoMentalGoBloody, thanks for your help again.

there could be a button : "not kids compatible" in the profile of players.
and when, let's say 5 or 10 people click on it, only then the name will be replaced in kid's mode.
bad names should quickly be replaced this way.
There could be a referral system as in #18, but i think it is best to opt out of sourcing community in this way, when it is possible. (self-explanatory example: Cheater Investigation Association, aka CIA, I know it is a steam off platform but there are lessons to be projected for a referral system, i think)

As long as, the names are consistent at a given user-end (ie. rematch or follow with the name unchanged) and as long as people are not bothered to be seen as Giraffe34 instead of GoMentalGoBloody by 6 year olds, auto-username-replacement could be a solution.
