Some help.

I'm a bit new to chess, and I'd appreciate it if I could become somebody's "protege" of sorts. :) Send a message if you're interested.
Personally, I think the best way to be better at chess is to play more games. You could also search up grandmaster games or other important games in history and try to use some of those maneuvers. But if you're looking for a real person, sorry, but I can't help you, since I'm not really a pro or anything. ;)
Simply playing more games won't do the trick. Using manoeuvres from grandmaster games won't do the trick if you have no clue what the motive behind the manoeuvre is. Behind every chess master there's been a great trainer and heaps of chess literature, unless your name is Capablanca or Réti.
Since I do not know your level of play, I would tell you to start on these three links:

/en.wikisource.org/wiki/How_to_Play_Chess_(Rogers)
My life is no example. A young master would be the example to follow, if they could explain how they learned and what they used to get there.
There are different ways to learn and I learned them in six different ways. I watched my father play, then my father explained to me what every piece could do, so I listened. We played the game ever night without even looking at a book. That created a foundation that was original to me, but had flaws in it. I now read books and use software to help me correct some of those wasted tempos, repeating those same errors repeatedly without even knowing it. «Chess is like a day that continually repeats until your content. »
I learned tic-tac-toe before even playing chess. I like the challenge of logical tactical chess puzzles, so I now train on Lichess to increase continually my problem solving skills.
Learning essential manoeuvres like triangulation is as important as learning tactics. To advance my studies I started to use these books :
Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess
Chess Openings: Traps and zaps
Chess: A psychiatrist matches wits with Fritz
How to play good opening moves
Chess openings for kids
100 Chess master trade secrets
When I looked at a book or software, the book had to be in steps. I have used Tasc Chess CD 2 and Chess Steps from : /stappenmethode.nl
A website that I found useful for my end games was : /chessgym.net
On my USB stick I carry with me the Portable Lucas Chess software from : /www-lucaschess.rhcloud.com
I use Lucas chess because it is very versatile and it tutors my moves. Lichess TV section is very interesting to discover new manoeuvres. I still physically play over the board games with others, because we can chat and express a grin while playing. On the internet, we cannot see the grins.
A software chess tutor is import. It can also be a good tool for a chess coach. A coach explains in different ways until the student understands, while they use software that only gives them a solution. A student can have more than one coach; each coach specialized by their strengths.
This is a guide I made awhile back for some friends who were looking for free ways to improve at chess and were just starting out. Here you go

Getting Better At Chess

A. Places to play chess games
- Free online sites such as : chess.com, chesscube.com, lichess.org

B. Places to look at the best players games
- Free sites such as http://www.chessgames.com/ , http://2700chess.com/ , http://database.chessbase.com/js/apps/onlinedb/ Are all good places to look at master games and learn from them or just watch them.

C. Free chess lessons
- Some strong players give free videos online to teach you about chess. Some of these include http://www.youtube.com/user/kingscrusher , http://www.youtube.com/user/ChessNetwork , http://www.youtube.com/user/jrobichess , http://www.youtube.com/user/thechesswebsite , http://www.youtube.com/user/GreenCastleBlock . I would recommend starting with their oldest videos first. You can become very good just watching videos and playing practice games.

D. Improving Tactics
- Chesstempo.com is the best site for practicing tactics. You should start out somewhere under or around 1000 rating after doing a few harder problems and getting an appropriate rating. Over time you can raise your rating a lot higher as you get better and improve.

E. How to start off games (Openings)
- Watching master games and the instructional videos should help you a lot with openings, but if you want to look up openings use http://database.chessbase.com/js/apps/onlinedb/ . You play moves out on the board it has on the site and master games that have been played with those moves will start to show up. The general rule is if a master played it, it’s good to play!
