Nerves - part of the game?

In the past I suffered terribly from "bad nerves" before and during games. My hands shook. It was torture and lead to me stop playing for several years. Now I´ m older and it´ s getting a lot better. Still in the endgame it´ s tough to stay calm under pressure or in critical positions. Does anybody have any tips or is it all about experience will make it better?
As my drill instructor used to say " you gotta have balls this big" at which point he would form his hands to illustrate the size of balls needed to perform the task at hand.
Do you mean in OTB chess or also online?
Nerves is part of the game. I can only recommend to play with increment, so that you at least avoid the stress associated with time trouble. Another way is to play correspondence chess.
Correspondence increases the nerves for me. I'm terrified that my opponent is coming up with deep analyses and strategies and completely outplaying me while I'm unaware of it.

Irrational, I know, but I feel I have to sink so much effort into correspondence, and work out every nuance of the position.
