Time Control Suggestions?

@war

I believe #7 is a stupendous troll, or a moron.

Personally I agree with your sentiment, this feature adds no discernible advantage yet it's surely a disadvantage for anyone wishing to play time controls other than the options given. As a 1900 I sometimes wait five mins before someone joins my 10+10 'seek'(i dont accept players more than 100 points below me), so this new feature does concern me.
I dont understand the complains, the free time controls are still there, and there is about 3000 games happening each second over here, it seems a lot to me, so I dont think you guys will have difficulties to find opponent at you time control of you preference. Cheers!
I just tried 10+0 using the new "quick game" feature. I have a preference for 10+5 because in the game I just played I was winning but I was lucky to get a draw by capturing all the pawns before my clock ran out. It would nice if 10+5 was offered but of course I can always use the "Lobby" to use any time control I want.

I appreciate the never ending improvements even though everything is already perfect.
@WarOverABoard

Oh my, where shall I begin.

What I said: "...it can make it more difficult for people to find acceptable seeks, as so many people have their own eccentric time control."

What you said: "There isn't any problem with people finding seeks as it is already so your conclusion about that is completely faulty. Nothing is broke. There's nothing to fix. "

I neither said that there was a problem finding seeks nor proposed a "fix".

"More difficult" is a comparative. It takes longer to get a matching seek when the population of seeks is spread over 20 time controls than when the same population of seeks is spread over 10.

I was stating the tradeoff between more and fewer choices. The advantage of the former is greater freedom; the advantage of the latter is faster pairing.

Never said there was a problem, never suggested a fix.

What I said: "As much as I love freedom for people to do whatever weird things they like, I've always been of the opinion that it wouldn't be a bad idea to restrict the available time controls."

What you said: "You want Lichess to be the only chess website that exists where you CAN'T play a rated game with a custom time control?"

I never said that. I didn't say restricting available time controls was the best way to do time controls, or even a great one.

I said I've always thought that it wouldn't be bad; what I was trying to convey by implication was that I'm quite ok with the new Quick Game feature, even though as you point out it will funnel some people into certain time controls.

The implication is pretty clear. If I wouldn't be terribly upset with restricting time controls altogether, I'm certainly not upset about just making some time controls easier to seek while retaining the ability to customize.

I was just giving my feedback on the new feature, but I do apologize if that implication was too difficult for you to follow.

What you said : "I definitely don't and I think you are part of a very, very small group. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that your idea would drive droves of people away from Lichess. That's probably why no website has ever implemented your idea in the history of the internet, and nobody has ever asked for it before. Yes, come to think of it, you are the first person I have ever seen or heard hold that opinion. That should be a pretty good indicator to you that it's not a good idea. "

What I said: "I would honestly be fine if the time controls represented on the quick games tab were all that were offered, even, but that's just me :)"

Two things.

First, I'm pretty sure the "that's just me :)" clearly indicates that I know it's an eccentric opinion of mine, but again, if that use of language is too difficult for you, I apologize.

Second, it bears repeating, nowhere did I suggest that lichess do this. The whole point (again) was that I would even be fine with a hard restriction, so I definitely don't have a problem with the new Quick Game setup that only makes some time controls easier to seek (and very marginally easier at that; what, you have to click the Custom square and pick your time control?).

Finally, @dearprudence said: "I believe #7 is a stupendous troll, or a moron."

For those who might have to look back a page or two to check, I'm #7.

I've already pretty thoroughly explained my seemingly straightforward post in the response to @WarOverABoard, so here all I can say is that I'm confused why you would conclude that I am either a troll or a moron.

It just doesn't follow, but that's fine; it's not the first non sequitur and ad hominem I've seen on the internet, and I'm sure it won't be the last. :)

Overall, I keep forgetting that I can't expect people on the internet to read something before they respond to it, much less use any thought to understand it.

Thanks for the reminder guys!

Omg....Honestly - TLDR. I started skimming and then stopped. What on earth is WRONG with you, dude? lol
So you are confirming the conclusion made by a_pleasant_illusion that you dont actually read what people write before you comment on it :-)
