Someone's salty about getting mated quickly

It refers to the salty salty tears that stream from the eyes of the person who is being called salty.
I agree totally, I hate it when I get mated too quickly !!
Salty means to be frustrated and/or angry because you lost at something. It's a gaming term popular in the fighting game community, but it also exists in other game genres like shooters.

I think the logic behind it is that when you're angry, your body gets hotter. Water evaporates when heated up, so all that's left in your body is sodium (aka salt).
"Salt" hasn't to be salty or bitter necessarily, it's just a metal /non-metal compound, often with ionic binding.

As a non-native speaker I cautiously try to contribute something which is rather an educated guess: positive feelings are linked to "sweet", the opposite is reflected in sour, bitter and salty.

That seems about right.

"That's sweet of you"

vs

"He was sour"
"He's bitter about it"
"Don't be salty"
I thought that someone being "salty" came from the sometimes coarse language spoken by fishermen on trawlers off the coast of West Cornwall...
