You should roughly know how to play the opening, yes, but learning actual moves really is a waste of time at that level.

While games may be decided by the time you get to the endgame, they certainly aren't before the midgame. Even if you play a terrible opening and your position is -0.5 or so, it doesn't matter if your opponent blunders a piece in the middle game.
