Site Communications

The simple interfacing on Lichess for playing chess is made to be self-explanatory. (On most other sites, an e-mail address and other things are required for registration, but here it is designed so that with any username and password you can immediately play games anytime.) Sometimes, people feel the need to talk or communicate about certain matters.

If you are logged in under an account, the most apparent way to chat is via the public conversations chat box on the main page. Appropriate conversations here may be just about anything and are visible to anybody logged in who is currently on the main page.

Some people prefer to talk about things on the forum, which doesn't need registration. (Anonymous persons can post.) The forum is a good place to talk about things between people for a certain subject you have in mind, since it has categorization of threads or topics you make (e.g., game analysis, site feedback, other chess discussion).

Either way, there is a set of rules in common:

  • No hateful words (for example, racist words).
  • No personal insults.
  • No advertising spam.
  • No hardcore cursing.

Violations of those rules will result in bans. However, the following are allowed when in proper context:

  • Soft cursing
  • Links to other websites
  • Discussions about the average air speed velocity of a swallow

One advantage to organizing discussions on the forum is that there is a search form at the top-left of the forum layout so that people can go back and find older discussions easier.

Lastly, if there is a specific person you want to contact, and you know his or her username, you might try the Inbox menu button at the top. (The menu bar at the top of the site is visible for people logged in under an account.) There is a list of logged on users, and one for all users by their rank on the site, seen by using the People menu action.

You may also notice links at the bottom of the website for accessing this open-source project, contacting the webmaster, seeing what features may be in store for the future, or other social links if you would like to learn more about Lichess.
