Discourage time wasters or people not being ready

Hi all

I think when accepting a challenge, and someone doesn't move - they should time forfeit the game after say 20 seconds of not moving. This is especially important on a time control like 0 with 2 second increment - as essentially some members of the site seem to set up this time control and "pounce a move" after about a minute.

FIDE is fairly brutal about this in real life - the idea is to encourage people to be there at the start of the game.

Feedback welcome
The abort button is there for this exact reason. What's wrong with aborting the game once you're fed up waiting?
Yes I use that, but I think if there was a rating penalty it might be interesting (as though the person lost) to stop this kind of annoying behaviour where someone sets up a game challenge and doesn't really care if they are around or not to play the first move.

However I guess then this can also lead to distorted ratings if it happens too much, and you might then also have to stop people just going and losing a tonne of games in a row like this.
It happens in classical games, too, and is infinitely annoying because you don't know if they are just debating about which opening to play or just aren't there. I've waited as long as 5 minutes before aborting a game before because I thought the opponent might have been having connection issues, when in reality they just didn't care enough to play the game they put up. I do tend to agree that I think maybe there should be some sort of penalty for posting a game request and then not joining the game, especially in the fast time controls where it forces the person who joins the game to watch like a hawk for some time wondering if the game creator will move or not. It's a bit absurd that people do this, but I imagine the abort function will be deemed "sufficient."
Generally agree with Clarkey EXCEPT for tournaments. Playing a 0+1 tournament with a player who does not move: a. wastes your time b. can be used to beat you.

Because the first few seconds in 0+1 are critical, it can be easy to lose a game if someone waits until almost the full 30 seconds before moving. You have to keep full focus for those 30 and if you assume they are not moving, or you are distracted, a quick move by them means you lose.

So I would suggest that for bullet time control tournaments (minimally 0+1) the time to lose drops a lot - maybe to 10 seconds. (Being primed to move for 10 seconds seems ok - for 30 seconds when you start to think they are not going to move, not so much :))
How about making a clock that counts down every 10 seconds or so. The player plays a move and most press the clock in time or play the move and the clock is automatic flipped over. If the other player does not press the clock in time (or play the move), the game is over. Give it the over the board feeling. Every move would have the same amount of time to react. Now that would be an original and interesting Blitz. Players would be under equal pressure on every move, without the ability to do pre-moves or gain accumulated time.
It's a pain in the backside and it happens all the time. Penalise them and they'll stop.
"Yes I use that, but I think if there was a rating penalty it might be interesting." No it wouldn't. Why should somebody lose points if they don't even play? This would just seem like a dumb and unfair rule to me. Use the abort button after 10 seconds or just stop playing the crappy 0 + x time controls.
Pools do this. I wish pools offered a greater variety of time controls.
